Opening reception for the Artisans at the Dahmen Barn's annual exhibition for photographers will be Sunday, June 7 from 1 to 3 pm. Harless Hartman is a recent arrival to Whitman County, moving here to be closer to her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Harless was recently hired as foundation coordinator by Whitman Community Hospital Foundation in Colfax, replacing Kimberly DeHart, who has resigned the position and plans to volunteer with the foundation. Friends of Whitman County Library collected $1,431 in coins during the 2015 penny drive in observance of National Library Week. Each library branch designated a special project for the money collected. Funds have been used for everything from Summer Reading goodies to library projects. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country. A display of American flags and U.S. service branch flags were again posted at the Endicott Cemetery over Memorial Day weekend. The flags are scheduled to be posted again for the Fourth of July. The display is a joint effort of Endicott Community Club and the cemetery board. Suzanne Schmick, longtime teacher and former principal at Endicott, has been named interim superintendent for the St. John/Endicott school district. Over the last few years, one of the remarkable successes is the record salmon returns to the Columbia River and its tributaries. Conversely, one of the biggest disappointments is low recovery of delta smelt in San Francisco Bay. To protect the smelt, a federal court ordered that water be flushed into the San Francisco Bay – 1.4 trillion gallons since 2008.
