    Sarah Appel of Colfax has been awarded a $1,500 "America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders" scholarship sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. Appel will attend Washington State University in the fall to pursue a career as a agriculture public relations specialist.     Whitman County Library summer reading 2016 theme will be “On Your Mark, Get Set -- Read!” The free, fun and educational program, which started June 1, offers rewards for children, teens and adults who complete the reading challenge.     A boater education course will be conducted June 14-15 upstairs at the Public Service building at 310 Main Street in Colfax from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Washington state requires residents born after Jan. 1, 1955, to have a boater education card to operate boats with motors of 15 horsepower or more.     Ryan Maley, Rosalia High graduate of 2014 and currently a sophomore at Yakima Valley College, was a member of the baseball team which won the 2016 NWAC Championship May 30 at Lower Columbia College in Longview. Thirty-two teams make up the NWAC. Yakima Valley College was the East Region champion during the regular season and earned one of the top seeds into the eight team tournament where they beat Everett CC for the title 5-2.     LaCrosse residents Norma Gibson, Madison Candler, Mike Stine and Jr. Ellis participated in the East Region Tournament at EWU in early May. They are all LaCrosse residents and participate on the Pullman Cougars Special Olympic team.
