We’re all familiar with car loans and home mortgages. They make it possible for consumers to make major purchases without paying cash up front. Responsibly done, everyone benefits – the purchasers, car dealers, autoworkers, realtors, construction crews and suppliers. Uncle Sam does the same thing on an international scale with the Export-Import Bank. Since 1935, the Ex-Im Bank has provided financing to foreign companies seeking to purchase American goods. Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2009. There are times when I feel it is my duty to my readers to investigate certain stories even if it involves great personal sacrifice, which is why, this past Aug. 23, I went to a rally hosted by the organizers of National Go-Topless Day. I’m not sure what I expected from National Go-Topless Day, but I think I have a pretty good idea of what I hoped. When I arrived at the rally, however, I found my view of the protesters was almost completely blocked by hundreds and hun... Full story
NATA Day June 19th marks National Attachment Trauma Awareness Day – a time for awareness of children having a difficult start in life. Many experienced early neglect or abuse and end up in foster care – some eventually are adopted by a new family. Some are orphans from faraway places, while others may have needed painful medical procedures or were separated from their parents for health reasons. Yet in nearly all cases, the lasting effects of trauma remain easily misunderstood by those outside the home. In fact, some children struggle with the...
It takes a nearly impenetrable obtuseness to conclude that the most salient thing to know about University of California Santa Barbara killer Elliot Rodger is that he was a white male who didn’t like women. Yet many liberal commentators have managed it in the painful festival of stupidity that has followed his horrific act of mass murder. The reaction has featured rants about sexism, white privilege and Hollywood, all of which are absurdly detached from the reality of what happened at UCSB. It is usually only the details of these sorts of r... Full story
We just fester with prejudice. As deep-seated as racial and sexual biases are, at least we’re dealing with them, and most of us understand that they’re wrong. But when it comes to our intolerance of weight, we don’t give a second thought. Our body bigotry is so ingrained that we consider it completely acceptable to make fun of fat people and to consider those who are overweight to be lesser people. What’s really ridiculous is that the contempt is aimed at an awful lot of us. A brand-new study tallies the rate of obesity in the United States at... Full story
Friday was the 70th anniversary of D- Day. the day American and Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, during World War II. The landings were audacious and fraught with danger. The Germans had spent four years constructing what they called Fortress Europe, massive coastal defenses designed to defeat any attempted invasion. It took less than a day for allied troops to overcome these defenses. The cost in lives was great, especially on the beach code- named Omaha. The bravery, determination and innovativeness of individual... Full story
