Because of a Gazette error in logging the number of Colfax High School graduates last year, the total number of Whitman County graduates in 2013 was actually 283, compared to 305 seniors who received diplomas this year. Colfax High School had 42 graduates in 2013 and awarded diplomas to the same amount of graduates Saturday. The story last week incorrectly reported that the number of Colfax graduates declined from 56 last year. Members of the Esther Reed Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution visited Rosalia Saturday, June 7, to observe the 100th anniversary of the dedication at the Rosalia Steptoe Battlefield State Park. The monument, rising 25 feet in height, and the park were purchased and dedicated by Rosalia citizens and the Esther Reed chapter on June 14, 1914. It is located on the actual battlefield where Col. A July 14 trial date has been scheduled in the U.S. District Court for the civil suit filed by Brenda Arthur, a member of the staff of the county assessor’s office, against Whitman County Assessor Joe Reynolds and Whitman County. The trial date was set after Judge Lonny Suko denied a summary judgement motion filed by the county’s attorney to dismiss the case. The Port of Whitman County was notified last week about receiving a grant for the airport at Colfax. Last September, a Federal Aviation Administration engineer told port commissioners that the runway at the Port of Whitman County Business Air Center must be rebuilt to be in compliance with federal standards. The two-year project, with a total cost estimate of approximately $3 million, includes the design and engineering phase this year and the construction phase in 2015.
