The Palouse Prairie Foundation is now accepting mini-grant proposals to promote the conservation and restoration of Palouse Prairie and to raise public awareness of the scarce ecosystem. The grant program is for students, teachers, conservationists, landowners and others interested in conserving and restoring remnants of Palouse Prairie. Grants range from $50 to $500. Whitman County commissioners unanimously approved changes to county zoning laws that would allow development of natural gas power plants by private companies. Commissioners Pat O’Neill and Michael Largent voted Monday morning to change code language that allowed only the development of such plants by public entities to include private developments. A $50,000 bail bond requirement was set for the pre-trail release of Dustin D. Clark, 20, Uniontown resident who was booked into the county jail after deputies responded to a domestic violence report from E. Woodworth in Uniontown. Clark has formerly been charged with four counts of malicious mischief, two counts of assault and one count of possession of methamphetamine. Karen Wallace is the new manager for the Rosalia branch of Whitman County Library. Wallace noted she used to spend Saturdays at the library’s former location next to the museum. Whew! I know many of you were involved with the fair last week. It was the first time for me, and I enjoyed meeting community members at the hospital booth. I was impressed by the many volunteer hours that are required to make the fair a success. Thanks to all for supporting the fair through attendance, volunteering and/or buying animals. As we move into fall, it is a great time to do a self-assessment of your health. How are you doing on the “five normals”? Jill Swannack of Lamont was the winner of the Kindle Touch prize in a drawing of entries from the adult segment of Whitman Library’s 2012 Summer Reading program. More than 150 adults submitted book reviews to receive local prizes and have their names submitted for the drawing. Teen Summer Reading this year increased 45 percent with 72 participants logging more than 1,000 hours. Dusty The Dusty community has royalty residing within its confines. Steve Maki won the Palouse Empire Fair Wheat King award for the second year in a row. Mashayla Morris, daughter of Luke and Jennifer Morris, received blue ribbons on both of her pigs during showing at the Palouse Empire Fair. Her brother Quincy received a ribbon in his showing of his calf, Grease, in the Little Cowpoke division. The miniature tables and chairs are home for Debbie Largent, who is working happily in her kindergarten classroom at Jennings Elementary, Colfax. Debbie always knew she would be a teacher, so no agonizing decisions for her. She and her husband Brian were both born and reared in Colfax. Brian and Debbie dated a little in high school and all the way through college. After a year at Multnomah School of the Bible, Brian went to WSU and graduated in agricultural mechanization. Dahmen to mark sixth fall event An old fashioned Sunday in Autumn will return to Dahmen Barn in Uniontown Sunday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This sixth annual free event features a pie baking contest with sales of pie ala mode following the judging and a silent auction of desserts which are contained in beautifully decorated boxes made by the resident artists. A veteran’s memorial tribute program will be conducted Monday, Sept. 17, beginning at noon in the Colfax cemetery. SPC Paul Swanson of the Washington Army National Guard honor guard said the tribute program extends funeral military honors to veterans who died prior to 2000 when Congress made ceremonial paying of respects a statutory benefit. Construction on the Colfax Airport Road is likely to begin in the next week and a half, but impacts to WSU football traffic may be minimal. Whitman County officials held a pre-construction meeting with DeAtley Construction Tuesday morning to hear the contractor’s plans for rebuilding the 3.09-mile road. Public Works Director Mark Storey reported afterward that the Clarkston-based firm expects to begin work as soon as the end of next week. Call it moose season, as this bull moose added to the county’s count of monstrous beasts who have been spotted this summer. This guy was munching on grass in a draw on ground farmed by Randy Suess south of Steptoe last Wednesday, Sept. 5. A worker from the Palouse Wind farm project on Naff Ridge who had stopped on the side of the road to take a picture said he has spotted several moose on the wind farm site as well....
Recently, Matthew Rose, CEO of BNSF Railway, visited editorial boards in Vancouver, Spokane, Seattle and Bellingham to talk about a variety of issues related to increased train traffic. However, the 800 pound gorilla in the room was not train traffic, but the commodity those trains would carry: coal. In Washington, coal has been shipped by train for decades.
