The Colfax High School Future Problem Solving team returned June 10 from international competition at Indiana University in Bloomington. The team was made up of Amelie Bruya, Joshua Huber, Hannah Knaack and Lindsay Webber. All will be seniors at CHS next year. They were accompanied by Coach Lori Brown. The team qualified for the trip from state competition in early April. The same team qualified for the international event in 2010. Rosalia Garden club Rosalia Garden Club plans their annual “Rose Show” at the Rosalia Library June 26-28 during library hours. Members and the public are invited to submit their exhibits June 26 between 9 and 10 a.m.; each rose must be botanically named. Stephanie Harder of Colfax graduated cum laude from Bentley University in Waltham, Mass., May 19. Commencement speaker was Larry Lucchino, president and CEO of the Red Sox. She majored in marketing and has been hired as a marketing analyst at Digitas, a digital advertising agency in Boston. Her undergraduate activities included serving two years as president of the Bentley Habitat for Humanity organization. Two programs are scheduled next Wednesday, June 27, at the St. John library. A family concert at 1 p.m. features the Traveling Light duo who will add musical fun to the Summer Reading program. Teens age 12-18 are invited to Spy Training at 6:30 p.m. to learn about the hidden world of spies and create an alternate identity while they solve crimes of international intrigue. Whitman County Library offers prizes for the countywide adult and teen summer reading programs. Teens in junior high and high school will be entered for the countywide grand prize and weekly drawings for every hour of reading. The teen grand prize for 2012 is an iPod Nano. Adults who read or listen to three books and write a brief review will be entered to win a prize at their local library and be entered to win a Kindle Touch as the countywide prize. Traveling Light, a versatile music duo specializing in light jazz and pop favorites from Bothell, will be featured in Whitman County Library’s third annual summer concert series set to visit 14 towns during the last week in June. Vocalist Mary Michaelson and keyboardist Lou Lippman will perform music for children including traditional songs and activities at eight of the concerts as part of the regular summer reading program. Community Band of the Palouse, formerly Pullman Community Band, has booked another busy summer concert schedule for the summer. They will be at the Moscow Farmer’s market next Saturday and plan their three-stop celebration of the Fourth of July at Johnson. Band members now include residents of Pullman, Moscow, Albion, Palouse and Elk River, Idaho. Oakesdale third and fourth graders came to the Farmington Library and Community Center to learn about the town’s history and the part it played in the development of the Palouse. Colleen Duty, who was born and raised in Farmington, gave a lesson on the history of the town, its people and the homes. Nan and Yosh Konishi moved to Rosalia from Spokane in 2000 in order to expand their business. Zoning difficulties in Spokane led them to look for manufacturing space. “Now we’re glad they did,” said Nan of the zoning officials who suddenly noted they were not in the proper zone after years in business. “It’s the best thing we’ve ever done.” Nan and Yosh have roots deep in Spokane, Nan having graduated from Rogers High School and Yosh from Lewis and Clark High School.
