Holly and Shannon on a trail ride near the Craig Mountains south of Lewiston. Life has brought Shannon and Holly Neibergs full circle, taking them from and bringing them back to the places they grew up. “A lot of it is serendipity,” remarked Holly. Shannon grew up in Pullman and Holly in Palouse. They now both work at Washington State University in Pullman and live in Palouse with their two children, Hannah, 15, and Ian, 12. Shannon and Holly both attended WSU and earned bachelor and mas...

November’s general election should be the last counted in the former kitchen area on the first floor of the Public Service Building. Whitman County this week called for bids from contractors to build an elections office. The project entails a remodeling of the vacant building at the corner of Main and Upton streets. The building last housed Greg’s Electric and prior to that housed Harrison Electric. County officials estimate the project will cost more than $450,000. The bulk of the cost will be footed by a $360,000 grant the county rec... Full story

“Eclipse,” the third in the series of Twilight vampire movies, opened yesterday. Are you Team Edward or Team Jacob? Karlie Thompson, Colfax “Jacob, definitely.” Why Jacob? “Because he’s tan and shirtless all the time.” Steve McSweeney, Colfax “That’s the movie with the fake werewolves and vampires? I don’t know, I don’t want to know anything about it. If a movie’s got animation in it, I don’t go see it.” Abby Muir, Colfax “I’m kind of torn between the two. Jacob’s abs really get you, but Edward’s got a great personality. He’s really sweet. It...
Several areas around Little Goose Lock and Dam have been closed this week for road maintenance work by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The corps is repaving and chip-sealing several sections of road leading up to the dam. Construction began Monday and is slated to continue through Friday. Improvements on the north shore of the Snake River include the road on the dam’s earthen embankment and the road from the dam west to the power substation. Along the south shore, the corps is repaving the road from the dam to the downstream parking area a...
A suit has been filed against Whitman County seeking alleged damages from an accident involving a county truck July 29, 2009, on the Lancaster Road at the intersection with the Harry Pierce Road. The suit was filed by Spokane Attorney Dan Johnson on behalf of Cynthia Morgan of Endicott. The complaint alleges a $400,000 claim for damages was filed with the county March 10 and 60 days have elapsed without a response. The claim procedure is required before a suit can be filed with the court. The suit itself seeks general and special damages but...
Beginning today, new construction in Whitman County will be subject to a new building code. Commissioners last Monday approved the county’s adoption of the newest version of the International Building Code. County Building Official Dan Gladwill said there will be few changes from the previous code. He said most of the new code updates definitions and corrects grammar. “We had a chance to deal with some of the really bad language by amending it out at the state building code council level,” he said. Major changes in the new code are tight...
Whitman County commissioners Monday approved the second amendment to the county’s 2010 budget. The amendment pushed the county’s operating budget $10,898 further out of balance. Primarily due to higher health insurance costs, payroll expenditures were adjusted up $42,226. Revenue, primarily grants which were not anticipated added $31,328 on the income side. The gap in spending and revenue leaves the county looking at an end of the year deficit of $349,690. Barring a sudden, unexpected influx of revenue, the deficit will be covered out of the...
I would like to share some information with citizens of Whitman County. By now everyone is aware of the changes made in the finance departments over the last month or so. I believe that we could not continue down this same old path hoping that New World, our computer system, that was purchased in October 2005, would work. It still is not operational. It was time to make some drastic changes; that are not easy decisions nor are they very popular. Since that has been done things are happening very quickly behind the scenes here at the county.... Rubber stamp Reasons for substituting the county’s Board of Adjustment with an outside hearing examiner for decisions on large scale corporate developments are: 1) Other counties do it; 2) Knowledge of environmental law may be required; 3) Members of the Board of Adjustment could become burdened and overwhelmed by a permit application of a major project; 4) Ensure that any single application would not clog the conditional use permitting system. (Gazette 6/17/10) My response to this reasoning is as follows: 1) Two wrongs do not make a right; 2...
W. Bruce Cameron I’ve read that the ancient Chinese art of feng shui can bring a sense of peace, well-being and positive energy to a home — same as beer. Curious, I arranged to have dinner with a feng shui master so I could interview him and write off the meal on my taxes. (He ordered a beer!) A serious, prepared-for-anything journalist, I took careful notes on a dinner napkin with the pen I borrowed from the waitress. Unfortunately, I left the napkin on the table, but I think I remember enough from talking to what’s-his-name to provide a tho...
In the 1970s, Washington’s public utilities embarked on an aggressive nuclear power building project managed by the Washington Public Power Supply System (WPPSS). Unfortunately, the effort ultimately became known as “Whoops!” WPPSS planned to construct five generating facilities in our state to meet future electricity demand. However, when the core of one of the reactors at Three Mile Island, Pa. nuclear power plant suffered a partial meltdown, support for nuclear power waned. As a result of the Three Mile Island accident and the subse...
IT’S BEGINNING to look like Seattle police officers just can’t do anything right. What doesn’t make sense is why they never seem to remember that there is a high likelihood that whatever they do is going to be caught by a camera, either one on a police car or a building or in the hands of some witness. Cameras are all over the place now. I was against the cops in the kicking of the Mexican man on the ground, especially when a woman cop added a couple of kicks for good measure after the men got through. I was against the security guards in th...

The state remains in financial trouble. It has made spending cuts, raised taxes and juggled cash and assets from different funds to meet the crisis this year. Still, money problems persist. Another major crisis looms. This time the state needs to find an estimated $3 billion to balance its next budget. The state, promises Governor Chris Gregoire, will look at major reforms in the hopes of shedding the status quo of over spending and short revenues. Some ideas include privatization of certain state functions and the elimination of programs. Addi...
Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife last week announced the results of its random drawing for 2010 special hunt permits. Dave Ware, game division manager, said more than 230,000 applications for special permits were submitted this year for special hunt sessions for deer, elk moose and big horn sheep. Ware said the decision to allow hunters to submit applications for multiple categories boosted the number of applications. Last year, 125,000 applied for permits. Those chosen for the special hunt will receive their permits by mail later...
Pro-moto motorcycle rodeo and rally will return to the Palouse Empire fairground over the holiday weekend with a display of vintage motorcycles, music by three bands and rodeo competition in the arena. Food service will be on the grounds. Bands booked to play Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. include the Longnecks, Boozefighters and Voodoo Church. The bands will play in...

Last year he competed at the veterans nationals in Las Vegas and won the Greco Roman class and...
After weeks of practice runs and car checks, Lind's junior racers go off the line on Smart's Hill with gravity providing the power. Most of the coaster car derby fans put up their lawn chairs in the shade next to the elementary school to watch the action. Race volunteers place hay bales at the bottom of the course to stop cars in the event their brakes fail, and the Adams County Sheriff loans their radar reader box so drivers get a solid read on their speed. This is about the “other” big event which happens in Lind on the second weekend in Jun...
