Army Staff Sgt. Steven E. Garrett, a 1995 graduate of LaCrosse High School, has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Sgt. Garrett is a wheeled-vehicle mechanic assigned to the 539th Transportation Company at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. He has served in the military for 15 years. He is the son of Steven and Cheri L. WSU Raptor Club members will bring birds of prey for a program at the Colfax Library Thursday, July 12, at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is invited to the free, family program sponsored by the Friends of Whitman County Library. Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown this month features an exhibit by the Salmon River Art Guild. It includes paintings in a wide variety of mediums: oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastels with subjects of landscape and still life. Gazette Intern The Idaho Repertory Theatre’s summer season has been cut short this year due to construction projects in the University of Idaho’s Hartung Theater. The theater’s rigging system, as well as its stage and the flooring, are all being remodeled. “We were due for updates,” said Alexiss Turner, marketing director for the IRT. Carl G. Seutter and Barbara Jo Ellis were married June 23, 1962, at the Community Presbyterian Church in Oakesdale. They lived in Delaware and then Oklahoma where he was employed with General Motors at Midwest City. They then retired and lived at Hudson, Fla. After two years of RV living they returned to Oakesdale in 2002. The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary with a land/cruise trip in Alaska, accompanied by their children, Carl G. An open house for the new Sterling Bank branch at LaCrosse will be next Thursday, July 12. Sterling opened its new branch Monday in the former location of Bank of Whitman. The building was purchased from the FDIC by the LaCrosse Community Pride. The community group will lease the site. Next week’s open house will include door prizes, food and drinks with a special presentation to the community. Lamont Friends of the Lamont Library with Ruth Simpson at the helm conducted a book sale in the new Lamont Library June 22-24. It included a bake sale and a raffle. Gale Mann won the grand prize, an Afghan and hand crochet slippers. Proceeds will be used to finish the plumbing, electrical wiring and the framing in the building. They are planning a spaghetti feed around the end of July to further the work in hopes of opening the library in November. Grants and donations will help with the completion. State transportation crews recently filled in the center line rumble strips on State Route 27 in eastern Whitman County. Al Gilson, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, said soft ground had sunk the low parts of the strips, and that left the peaks of the strips brittle enough to break as traffic rolled over them. State DOT crews installed rumble strips in the center of the two-lane SR 27 last year, along with rumble strips on highways 26 and 127, in an effort to reduce the number of crossover collisions on the highways. Justin J. Hardgrove, 30, Colfax, has been summoned to appear in court July 13 after a charge of theft of a motor vehicle was filed against him June 26 in Whitman County Superior Court. The charges followed an investigation by Colfax officers last November. Police received a report from a Colfax woman who said Hardgrove borrowed her 1997 Chevrolet Malibu Nov. 21.
