The Colfax Relay for Life kicks off this Friday at the Colfax High School track and runs through to Saturday morning. The Relay is a big, important event and has evolved over the years. There are more activities, more participants and far more money raised for the American Cancer Society than ever imagined possible at its inception. Susannah Scaroni, Tekoa High School grad who placed fifth in the Boston Marathon wheelchair race, has qualified for the paralympics in London in September. Scaroni, who returned to her home area in May and placed second in the Bloomsday wheelchair race, competes for the University of Illinois racing team. A member of the 2009 class at Tekoa, she was raised in Tekoa and rolled up a series of wheelchair wins in WIAA competition for the Nighthawks. Organizer Aaron Flansburg invites any and all who would like to donate their time, talent, money or knowledge to the cause of building a skate park in Palouse. Colfax dentist Robert T. Smith received the 2012 Fellowship Award from the Academy of General Dentistry during the organization’s annual meeting in Philidelphia last month. The award is presented to dentists who seek to provide high quality dental care by remaining current in their profession. Dr. Smith completed 500 hours of continuing dental education, passed a comprehensive exam and fulfilled three years continuous membership in the academy. Pullman Patriots returned to the Spokane Senior Legion campaign Monday and Tuesday and booked a 3-1 stint at WSU’s Bailey-Brayton Field. Tuesday, they stopped the Northstars 10-0 and 4-3, and Monday they split a pair with the Spokane Blue Devils. The stint left the club at 10-8 in the league campaign before another pair set for Wednesday against the same Northstars club in Spokane. The 10-under regular season team from Potlatch battled through for a third-place finish Sunday in the Potlatch Wooden Bat tournament. The tournament again brought teams, many of them all-star groups assembled after expiration of the regular home seasons, from all over the area for the three-day event which was waged by 15 teams as the heat wave hit the area. A relay team of St. John girls competed under triple-digit heat in the relay race up Mt. Spokane Saturday. The relay race started at the Clock Tower at Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane and took teams out the Centennial Trail, through Green Bluff and eventually up the mountain. Total distance was approximately 34 miles. Eagle Coach Andrea Miller said the team was made up of girls who plan to compete in the SJE cross country team next fall. Whitman County is reconsidering the roster of its citizen planning commission. Because of difficulty in attracting volunteer members, commissioners are considering reducing the nine-member board to seven members. The volunteer commission sets land use policy for the county. In recent years, the planning commission has dealt with a number of controversial issues, including zoning laws for wind farms, housing in the agricultural zone and development rules for the Pullman-Moscow Corridor. Farmington voters will be asked Aug. 7 to decide on whether to fund $10,000 for streets and $15,000 for general maintenance in special levy proposal. The proposal follows last November’s failure of a $32,000 package of levies for street and general maintenance, along with equipment. A 60 percent majority is required for the measure to pass. Motions for partial summary judgments were denied Monday morning in superior court to close three hours of hearings by the attorneys involved. The hearings again followed a flurry of court filings related to what parts of the case can be presented to the jury at a trial. The court schedule now calls for a four-week trial on the suit to begin Oct. 15. Every Monday, it’s time to tend the roses in Palouse. Beginning in May, a group of volunteers have met Monday mornings to take care of the memorial rose gardens which began in Palouse five years ago. “I had a wonderful dream to have roses in downtown Palouse,” said Mary Estes, a longtime resident and certified master gardener, who started the project. A blast of wind Monday morning left a trail of destruction in the Clear Creek Road area east of Colfax. Witnesses said the high-powered blast sounded like a low-flying jet plane when it traveled north to south at about 7:20 a.m. Approximately 20 feet of a barn at the Todd and Roxanna Scholz farm on the S. Palouse River Road was destroyed. The wind blast distributed debris from the barn along an airplane landing strip. The blast also took out eight trees, power lines and corrals when it hit. Army Sgt. Christopher Garrett, a 1995 graduate of LaCrosse High School, is now serving in the Army at Ft. Wainwright in Alaska after completing a tour of duty in Afganistan. Sgt. Garrett has also completed two duty assignments in Iraq, and one in Kuwait during his 16-year career in the Army. He is the son of Steven and Cheri Garrett of LaCrosse. Colfax Sunday will be part of the Pullman Regional Artwalk under the Sunday Drive for Art theme. Palouse, Uniontown and Rosalia are also participate in the Pullman Artwalk 2012.
