    The USDA Farm Service Agency is accepting nominations for the Whitman County Committee until Aug. 1. The three-member committee consists of farmers and ranchers elected by their peers to administer farm programs and provide a link between producers and the FSA. The committee also hears producers’ appeals of agency determinations.     Primary candidates forums will be Tuesday, July 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Colfax Branch of Whitman County Library and Wednesday, July 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Pullman City Hall. The forums will include candidates vying for commissioner districts one and two. Candidates in district one scheduled to participate are incumbent Greg Partch of Garfield and challengers Art Swannack of Lamont and Bill Tensfeld of Rosalia. All are Republicans.     The proposal to develop a bike trail between Colton and Uniontown is gaining momentum with an agreement between the Uniontown Community Development Association and WSU’s Rural Communities Design Initiative.   • Bad week for motor homes

    Nancy Strain of Moscow walked away uninjured when her motor home caught fire while driving on Colfax Airport Road. Strain said she saw smoke begin to billow out of the motor home’s center console and decided to bail out with her dog just before it was engulfed in flames. Fire crews from Colfax, Dusty and Diamond responded to the blaze. Another motor home was destroyed by fire Monday night in a field along Highway 26 in the LaCrosse area.   • Martin Hall could close by this fall

    The Martin Hall juvenile detention center may be in its last three months. Nine counties voted June 28 to keep the cooperative juvenile detention center open until the end of September while they determine if they will keep the Medical Lake facility operating, according to Commissioner Pat O’Neill. “We’ll decide if we’re going to close Martin Hall or not,” said O’Neill, who represents Whitman County on the detention center’s joint board of directors.   • Relay for Life is this weekend

    Cancer fundraiser will mark 17th year with events at high school track The 17th-year edition of Whitman County Relay for Life will get underway Friday night at the Colfax High School track with 16 teams in the competition this year. Total enrollment on the 16 teams now stands at 319 people who will walk the relay loop as part of the fund drive. Proceeds from the relay go to the American Cancer Society in their battle against the disease. Teams in the event have already undertaken a variety of events to generate funds.   • First tower goes up at Palouse Wind farm

    The first section of the first tower of Palouse Wind’s $170 million wind farm in northern Whitman County was erected last Friday. Construction was halted after the segment was put up because highway permits delayed shipment of the top segment and the naselle, the part of the turbine which generates electricity from the turning blades, according to Ben Fairbanks, western development manager for First Wind.
