    Washington American Legion presented Pullman Police Sgt. Jake Opgenorth the Law Officer of the Year award at its annual meeting in Grand Mound, Wash., July 15. The Pullman Maynard-Price American Legion Post 52 previously presented Opgenorth with the local award in February. Sgt.   • Elected officials salary hike set by commission

    Pay increases for Whitman County elected officials were set Monday during a meeting of the county’s special commission to set salaries of elected officials. The commission allowed monthly pay hikes as a cost of living adjustment. The pay increases will start next year. Sheriff Brett Myers, who at an earlier commission session pointed out the increased insurance premiums he has been required to pay, received the largest raise, a $531 hike from $7,176 per month to $7,707 next year.     Whitman County Superior Court approved an order to tear down this Endicott Road building April 21. The proposed demolition of a Winona building is back on track following a call for bids that received no response.     Whitman County Commissioners Monday approved a reduced speed limit for three-tenths of a mile of Old Moscow Road. Dropping from 50 mph to 35 mph, the new limit effective Sept. 1 will apply to a section past the last house and before pavement starts.   • LaCrosse seniors offer harvest meals

    Lacrosse Members of the LaCrosse High School class of 2017 have started a harvest meal service as a fund raising project. For a $10 fee, they will make lunches for harvest crews and deliver them to LaCrosse and Washtucna by 10 a.m. July 23 and 30.     The Malden Town Council is in the process of making plans for the Malden park, where they plan to relocate the playground fixtures to be at more convenient locations.   • BC Trail closed until Saturday

    The Bill Chipman Trail between Pullman and Moscow will be closed until Saturday morning to allow for application of a sealing coat. The contractor on the project has applied filler to the cracks along the trail, and the sealer has been applied to about half of the distance.     Whitman County commissioners Monday accepted a $1,816,621 bid Monday for the Sand Road bridge-widening project from M.A. DeAtley of Clarkston. Other bids were $2,322,798 from M.L. Albright & Sons of Lewiston and $2,163,437 from Western Construction, also of Lewiston. For Edmundson Bridge on Sand Road, an increase in traffic has led to the need to widen the 19-foot-wide span on the 25-foot-wide road.
