  • Garfield water project replaces old leaded lines

    Jeslyn Lemke|Jul 22, 2010

Garfield has installed a 2,100 foot PVC water pipe along Second Street. Crews have been working since January to replace leaking, lead pipe under the street. The town council moved to accept the job June 23. “We’d been having problems with it coming apart. It leaks constantly,” said Garfield Mayor Jarrod Pfaff. Construction crews shut down Second Street a block at a time to install the eight-inch pipe. It replaced a four-inch pipe. “Hopefully, this one doesn’t leak. It should last longer,” he said. Pfaff added the line can handle a larger volu...

  • Beetle mania sweeps Kamiak Butte thistles

    Jeslyn Lemke|Jul 22, 2010

Tiny pollen-dusted beetles dig deeply into the yellow flowers of the yellow-star thistle on the south side of Kamiak Butte. One, two, three, maybe four hairy weevils at a time can collect on a single yellow flower, their main source of food. Park officials released 11,000 weevils on the southern slopes of Kamiak Butte July 6 in a federally-funded bid to rid the area of yellow-star thistle. The weevils are a bio-control solution to preserve the native fauna of the 1,000-acre butte, one of the few remaining native areas in Whitman County. A... Full story

  • Town of Palouse faces budget cuts

    Jeslyn Lemke|Jul 22, 2010

Palouse city staffers are reviewing their budgets to come up with an estimated $20,000 cut from the city’s current expense fund. A drop in state-shared revenue is forcing the city to cut its own budget, said Mayor Michael Eshcanove. Joyce Beeson, city treasurer, said the city law enforcement, parks, administration, and cemetery management are checking where they can save money. The city’s current expense fund holds $156,000. “We’re not talking about cutting services or anything, so I don’t feel it will affect the public much, yet,” Beeson said.... Full story

  • Opposition at hearing:Ban on building atop buttes could be lifted in weeks

    Joe Smillie|Jul 22, 2010

Whitman County’s 15 named buttes may be open for housing development soon. County commissioners will decide in the next two weeks if they will remove restrictions that prevent development on the tops of buttes. Five residents urged commissioners not to remove those restrictions at a public hearing Monday. “Taking the buttes out of protection is going to have an environmental impact on the Palouse for decades,” said Carolyn Kiesz of Thornton. Passed in 2007, the county’s rural residential zoning ordinance included restrictions intended to stav...

  • W. BRUCE CAMERON - French Sports — Sacre Bleu!

    Jul 22, 2010

The Tour de France is on this month ... and on, and on, and on. It started July 4 in Belgium and will end in Paris on July 25 — about twice as long as it took the German army to cover the same distance, and they were walking. You’d think a bicycle race would be fairly straightforward — people get on their bikes and ride, well, straight forward. But this is France, so it’s more complicated than that. For one thing, the clothing the teams wear is extremely important (just like in that other hard-hitting sport, figure skating). Every team member...

  • Letters - July 22, 2010

    Jul 22, 2010

To the dogs There is a law in Colfax which requires dog owners to keep their dog on a leash or contained so it does not run. There is a problem in Hauser Heights with small dogs running around and leaving their mess in my yard and other yards as well. I am going to put a fence around my yard as soon as I can but in the meantime I am tired of picking up or walking in dog feces. I have watched the owner of one particular dog on a leash letting it do its duty in my yard, then leaving the mess for me to pick up. The surprising part of all this is t...

  • Don Brunell - Pig in a Poke

    Jul 22, 2010

Over the next few years, your trusty incandescent light bulbs will become illegal. Didn’t know that? Don’t feel bad, few people do. Perfected by inventor Thomas Edison in the 1880s, the incandescent light bulb has been a shining example of American ingenuity and innovation. In fact, the light bulb is the very symbol of a good idea. Alas, after 130 years of faithful service, the incandescent bulb has been banned by Congress as energy inefficient. Beginning in 2012, 100-watt bulbs will be banned, followed by all others in 2014, although thr... Full story

  • Adele Ferguson - Queries from Ferguson readers

    Jul 22, 2010

“SAY, WHOEVER wound up with Helen Thomas’ old seat in the front row of the White House news conference room?” asks Sidney Pollack of Spokane. “Last I heard, there were several people and news outfits bidding for it.” My computer news source tells me that it’s in the final throes and may be done by now. It was between Fox News and Bloomberg News. Fox claimed it had a chit from the White House Correspondents Association because it gave up its seat to CNN in 2007 and was promised the next opening. However, Al Hunt made an 11th hour plea for hi...

  • Opinion - Commissioners vote themselves defense fund

    Jul 22, 2010

At last, the county commissioners acted quickly and cooperatively. It was a unique situation. For the past months, they have been at loggerheads. Commissioners Greg Partch and Pat O’Neill have overruled Michael Largent on a number of important issues. Tensions and emotions have run high. So the recent smooth-as-silk votes were a surprise except for the fact that the votes were to protect themselves. Both Partch and O’Neill are facing recall action. As a consequence, Partch and Largent voted to provide O’Neill county funds for his legal defense.... Full story

    Samantha Weaver|Jul 22, 2010

*It was British mathematician, historian and philosopher Bertrand Russell who made the following sage observation: “If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have paradise in a few years.” *Do you know why camels are artiodactyls, while humans aren’t? It’s because dromedaries have an even number of toes (two) on each foot, while we have an odd number. *According to a poll conducted in the United Kingdom, 80 percent of male college freshm...
