    Competing at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Rock Springs, Wyo., July 13-19, Rosalia’s Mattie Jo Johnson finished 11th in breakaway roping. She roped all three calves in the final round in a total of 10.53 seconds. Each participant competed in two sessions in the event or events in which he/she qualified for the National Finals.     Asotin County Blues, a top bracket team which rode the fence all the way to the state Junior Legion playoffs last weekend in Spokane ended the season for the Colfax-based Posse team in the first playoff round last Thursday. Asotin finished its Spokane run with a 3-1 record to get the number-three Spokane ticket in the 16-team state finals. Other Spokane finalists include Mt.     Whitman County commissioners Monday approved the six-year Transportation Improvement Program which was presented by Public Works Director Mark Storey. The plan, which outlines projects from 2015 to 2020, includes work this year on countywide overlays, the Hatley Bridge, Run-Off-Road and intersection safety project, turn lane and signage and Odonnell Road work.   • Winona, Endicott firefighting volunteers honor former Chief Virgil Jordan

    Retired Winona volunteer firefighter and fire chief Virgil Jordan misses the people he helped through the years but doesn’t miss fighting fires. Jordan, who will be 85 in August, officially retired a few weeks ago with a reception at the Endicott Fire Station. He was presented a plaque honoring his 40 years of service to the fire district as chief. He actually served on the department for 60 years since he volunteered after moving to Winona in 1954. “I drove the Winona fire truck,” he said....

    Attorneys in the civil suit by a group of residents to halt county involvement in the construction of the proposed Hawkins shopping mall on the state line have reached a settlement agreement of dismissal. The suit, filed by the Organization to Void Illegal Conduct, sought an injunction to halt county participation in the proposed development of more than 200 acres of land located north the Moscow-Pullman Highway.     The 15-year-old Colfax boy who was arrested May 30 at Colfax High School after he brought a BB pistol to school was sentenced to 30 days in confinement July 17 in juvenile court. He pleaded guilty to a charge of bringing a firearm to school. The youth was ordered to serve the first 10 days in custody and then be released to undergo a mental evaluation.     Another Colfax moose picture was forwarded to the Gazette last week. This critter made a stop in the back of the Gene and Queenie Leinweber home on the Walla Walla Highway. The moose munched some apples and stayed in the yard until close to dark. Mrs. Leinweber said it was the first moose they have ever seen at their place.     Combines are running in most of southern and western Whitman County. On the left a combine unloads on a farm between Endicott and Winona on a warm Monday afternoon. They were running two John Deere combines with two trucks. On the right is a combine cutting grain on a hillside between Endicott and Diamond. Onecho farmers were starting harvest this week as well.     Whitman County firefighters are being deployed to fires throughout Washington and Oregon. Whitman County Emergency Management Director and Rosalia Fire Chief Bill Tensfeld said Tuesday that Rosalia had three trucks and eight firefighters at the Watermelon Hill fire southwest of Cheney over the weekend.     A U.S. District Court jury in Spokane Friday ruled in favor of Whitman County Assessor Joe Reynolds when it rejected the sexual harassment suit filed by Brenda Arthur, an employee in the assessor’s office. The jury returned a verdict of “no” on whether or not Arthur was subjected to a sexually hostile work environment in the assessor’s office.
