    A long American Legion season for the Pullman Patriots came to an end Sunday when they sustained their second loss at the regional round at Issaquah High School. Yakima Valley defeated the Patriots 5-2 to knock the Pullman club out of the state title hunt. Qualification format for the 16 teams at the four state regional events was to win two games before they lost two games.     Norm Pauls, 56, Colfax, was released from Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane last week, after being treated for a farm accident. Pauls was pinned beneath an augur near LaCrosse July 16. Whitman County Sheriff’s Chaplain Ron McMurray said Pauls was working beneath a portable grain elevator-loading augur when it collapsed onto his leg. Coach Reece Jenkin reported the varsity squad, normally with 11 players, logged about 30 games over the summer campaign, and the jayvee players participated in approximately 15 games.     Last year was the summer of construction in Tekoa. This year is part II, and it has topped the first. Starting last August, the six miles of PVC pipe that make up the Tekoa Water System Project were extended from residential streets to main street this summer.     Whitman County’s health department reported the first confirmed case of whooping cough, or pertussis, in a nine-year-old girl living somewhere within the county. Fran Martin, health department director, said people who had been in close contact with the girl had been contacted and given antibiotics.     Major work to rebuild South Main Street in Colfax is expected to begin in the middle of next week. Construction crews were slated to begin relocating utility fixtures as early as last Wednesday.     Colfax school board members July 16 approved a $6,039,775 budget for the coming school year. The total sum is up about $7,800 over the present budget year. The approval vote was booked during the board session after a budget hearing. In his report to the board, Reece Jenkin, district business manager, said the budget for next year now carries a $134,000 deficit which would come out of the district’s reserve fund.     The grain rustling trial against James Hughes of Endicott came to a sudden end Friday when the jury was unable to agree on a verdict. Hughes was charged with 19 counts of stealing and selling grain from elevators owned by the Whitgro grain cooperative.
