It was a huge granite block which marks the southeast corner of the elegant building of the Colfax Hardware Company at the northwest corner of Main and Spring streets. A business plan for the Colfax Citizens Committee for the swim pool was discussed at Monday's Colfax Park Board meeting. Councilman Al Vorderbrueggen, who also heads the park board, reported on the park session July 17 to the city council. Fundraising and grant writing were discussed by the park board. The funeral for Mark S. Hawley, 66, long-time resident of Viola, was Saturday, July 22, at the Moscow Church of the Nazarene. Burial followed at the Viola Cemetery. Mr. Hawley died July 17, 2017, at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane where he had been under treatment following a heart attack July 5. The deadline for the Plein Air “Inspired Palouse 2017” Art Competition was Monday, July 24. Conflicting dates on various press materials sent out for the contest led to confusion. The contest is a new multimedia art competition and exhibition sponsored by the Colfax Arts Council. Entries were allowed in all media – painting, fabric art, sculpture, photography and more. Command of the Garfield County fire along the Snake River, across from Nisqually John Canyon, was returned to local control at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, from a state mobilization status. The fire, which ignited off a lightning strike at about 2 a.m. Saturday, consumed approximately 3,100 acres. A reduction in wind and cooler temperatures helped fire crews stop the fire, and units from around the state that responded to the call began departing for home July 18....
A new entry on the Department of Transportation project list is minor bridge work on Highway 26 in the Hooper-Washtucna area. The work is rated as minor with possible lane restrictions between mile markers 84 and 92 in Adams County. Chip sealing and minor work for Highway 271 between Oakesdale and Rosalia and for 272 between Colfax and Pullman remains on the construction list with possible delays up to 20 minutes. Dusty Over the weekend, Tom and Doreen Riedner attended the Riedner Family Reunion in Colton. More than 150 aunts, uncles and cousins attended. Local artist Molly Rice is offering “Art in the Park” for children eight and older at Schmuck Park. Rice, who worked in landscape design for many years, draws in pen and ink, paints mixed media acrylic and organic on canvas, creates hand-crafted papers and does nature photography. Endicott Leaving on July 4, Willy and Anne Lowe traveled with Ed and Mae Schultz of Colfax to Sheridan, Wyo. On the way, they stopped in Three Forks, Mont., for an overnight stay at the historic Sacajawea Hotel. At Sheridan, the guys did their annual prairie dog hunt.
