    A long-time employee of the Department of Agriculture, Shirley Sherrod, gave a speech on overcoming prejudices. A tape of the speech was heavily edited, and the remaining snippets distorted her comments, making her appear to use her position in an unfair and prejudiced manner.     A practice softball game between a Spokane-Coeur d’Alene team and a Lewiston team, Northwest Wildfire and the LC Heat, was actually rained and sprinklered out Tuesday at McDonald Park in Colfax.     Jack Ross of Colfax and Kaela Dewan of Oakesdale backstroke to wins in the individual medley relay. Ross won in the 12-under class, and Dewan won in the 15-over girls class. Colfax swimmers stroked to strong wins Tuesday in a four-team meet at the Colfax pool. Taking advantage of their depth, the Colfax team stacked up points in the placings.     A front showroom window broken out at Arrow Machinery on Highway 195 early July 22 and thousands of dollars worth of merchandise were discovered missing from the showroom. Among the missing items were several Stihl chainsaws, trimmers, cut-off machines and blowers, according to a report by Deputy Sgt. Rick McNannay.     With a little more than a month before the Palouse Empire Fair, animal entries are trending far below past years. “We’re way behind where we usually are at this point,” said Fair Manager Bob Reynolds. As of Monday, fair officials had received 56 beef entries, 28 sheep entries, 61 swine entries and a handful of entries for smaller animals like goats, rabbits and poultry.     Brandon Reynolds, 27, driver of the pickup truck involved in the accident which took the lives of an Albion couple Friday, July 16 on the Pullman-Albion Road will be cited for failure to yield to oncoming traffic, Sheriff Brett Myers reported Thursday, July 22.     Commissioners of the Port of Whitman County at their July 15 meeting approved payment of $16,763 to the Mader family to wrap up a real estate deal in Pullman. The port in 2007 purchased nearly 53 acres of land from the Maders for a new industrial park at the southwest corner of the intersection of Highway 27 and the Pullman-Albion Road. The refund comes after an ownership mixup on more than 47,000-square-feet of land at the site.     A Colfax school board seat is now open after the resignation of board member Steve Lyon. The board is encouraging residents living within Lyon’s central Colfax district to apply for the volunteer position. Lyon officially resigned from the school board July 1. Lyon worked as a WSU senior assistant on winter wheat breeding research for the department of crop and soil sciences.     An accident on Highway 193 across the river from Clarkston early Sunday morning, July 25, took the life of Curtis D. Fleming, 24, Clarkston. A passenger in the 1998 Ford Mustang sustained burns and rib injuries. Also, two people in a car behind the Mustang sustained injuries when that car went off the highway and struck an embankment.     Farmers have until Aug. 13 to apply under the general sign-up for funding from the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).     John Archie Snover, 75, Tekoa area resident who was reported missing Wednesday, July 21, has been located in the Toledo, Ohio, area, according to the sheriff’s office.     A proposal to bump water and sewer rates in Colfax by three percent a year over the next five years was delayed July 19 when city council members requested more information on what the hikes would produce.     County Parks Ranger Justus Barton has resigned to take a full-time position with a private, contract firefighter. The parks department is now in the process of hiring a full-time ranger to manage Kamiak Butte, Bill Chipman Trail, Colfax trail and some grounds in the Elberton area.
