When the first autumn call of Colfax football goes out next month, one familiar face, and voice, will be missing. Assistant Coach Craig Culbertson, a part of the Bulldogs grid campaigns for the most part of 40 years, decided at the end of last season to close out his run as assistant coach. Whitman Cougars played four games and finished in the top eight of the 16-team state Legion A division state tournament over the weekend at Walla Walla. The Cougars started with a 10-0 shutout of Olympia in the first game Saturday and then ran into the Richland Knights who took a 4-14 win Sunday. In a formal action at a regular meeting of the Palouse School board Thursday night, a Garfield-Palouse institution will end. Veteran boys’ basketball coach Tim Coles will retire after 34 years teaching and 29 years as head coach of the Vikings, including three state championships. Inland Northwest Bank (INB) and the Bank of Fairfield have announced a merger. The merge, to take place this fall, will keep the four Whitman County Bank of Fairfield locations open, but they will operate under the INB brand, said Jason Miller, vice president of marketing at INB. The Garfield Municipal Pool is back in stride after a three-week delay in opening for the summer due to an electrical matter following installment of a new filter system. The pool opened July 8 after waiting for state inspection of the work, which included new subpanels too. “We had to re-do all of that without electrocuting the kids,” said Pool Manager Missy Cochran. The Whitman County six-year Transportation Improvement Plan (T.I.P.) has been updated once more after County Commissioners approved an amendment to the current plan and the adoption of next year’s 2016-21 document. The plans are a state requirement. If a capital improvement is made to a road, the T.I.P. calls for updating, which includes a public hearing. Data released by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) earlier this month shows a decrease in the state and national unemployment rate, while the Whitman County rate saw a 1.4 percent increase in a month's time. The national unemployment rate dropped from 5.5 percent to 5.3 percent, and the state rate also dropped slightly from 5.4 to 5.3 percent, now matching the national average. School may not be in session, but the Rosalia School District is hard at work prepping for the 2015-16 school year, set to start in September. Expanding its course offerings, the district will now offer online courses to more students. Rosalia has offered online courses in the past, but those have been available primarily for students in need of credit recovery. The departments of Whitman County government will have more LaserFiche use after county commissioners approved money for five new licenses at their July 20 meeting. The $6,465 purchase includes annual maintenance for the software which scans documents into non-condensed images with optical character recognition (OCR), the feature that makes a document searchable. Harvest has been in full swing around the county for nearly two weeks now, and grains are starting to reach the Department of Agriculture Grain Inspection Office in Colfax. This year's edition of the Palouse Empire fair will feature a construction zone with an addition to the Community Building underway. The project is the latest major addition to the fairground which is being done by the Palouse Empire Fair Foundation. Chad Startin, foundation president, told the fair board Monday night they plan to have the walls of the addition project up by the start of the fair Sept. 10.
