    Whitman County Sheriff’s Chaplain Ronald L. McMurray achieved the diplomate credential level from the International Conference of Police Chaplains which has been at the forefront in training and credentialing law enforcement chaplains for more than 40 years. ICPC’s diplomate credential is the second highest credential given and signifies completion of 500 hours of professional studies, 15 years as a law enforcement chaplain, acquisition of 20 credits and service to ICPC.   • Oakesdale will receive reduced flood zone map

    A new floodway map is nearing completion for the town of Oakesdale. The project began three years ago when previous Oakesdale Mayor Russ Rickett submitted a request to conduct a re-study of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) map of the town. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers granted the request and began a detailed flood study, including mapping/cross sections and computer modeling.     Uniontown Community Development Association’s Main Street restoration of the Vollmer building is complete. UCDA President Dale Miller and architect Craig Beaumont of Palouse Design Associates inspected the property July 31, the culmination of a two-year project, beginning with the UCDA’s purchase of the building at auction in 2012.   • Memory blooms in Farmington

    A memory rose garden project in Farmington is nearly complete with two planting areas along the town’s new basketball court. The idea came about last summer while volunteers worked on rebuilding the court. The installation of concrete retaining walls led to many volunteers asking project coordinator Noreen Ewing what was going to be planted in them. “It took off better than we expected,” Ewing said. “It was what the community wanted so that’s what we did.” There are now 14 roses in the planting area along Washington Street and 17 in the park...

  • Fire doused at JES

    Fire crews doused a fire which ignited Friday evening in a janitor’s utility room at Jennings Elementary School. Smoke from the fire triggered an automatic alarm system which led an alarm company to call the fire station at 7:01 p.m. Fire Chief Clark Capwell said the fire apparently started in a laundry bag which was located in the custodian’s room. He said the fire door for the room limited oxygen supply to the fire and the concrete floor beneath the bag limited fuel supply. Pomeroy's championship strokers again stacked up an unbeatable pile of points Saturday at Colfax to win the Cluckey trophy for the eighth straight year.   • Judge dismisses OVIC suit to stop hike in Hawkins pact

    The order dismissing the injunction suit filed against the Whitman County and Hawkins Companies was filed July 31 in Whitman County Superior Court. The order was signed by Judge John Strohmaier of Lincoln County who was assigned to preside over the civil suit. The suit was filed by the Organization to Void Illegal Conduct, a group of residents who contested the county’s extension of an agreement to help fund infrastructure for the proposed Hawkins shopping center on 204 acres of property located north of the Moscow-Pullman Highway on the W...

  • County issues call for outside accounting services

    Whitman County commissioners Monday issued a qualifications call for professional services to compile an assessment of the county’s financial management. Cost of such a project had earlier been estimated in the $80,000 range in a preliminary quote from the Government Finance Officers’ Association. Monday’s call opens up the project to other firms who could provide the assessment services. Deadline for submitting proposals to the commissioners’ office is Aug. 18.     Dirt has been turned on the Palouse skate park project. After almost two years of wrangling for a site for the volunteer-driven and privately-funded project, Aaron Flansburg’s Palouse skate park committee put a sign up and broke ground July 22.     County Assessor Joe Reynolds garnered 59.14 percent of the votes in the closest race for the Whitman County Primary election. The first count Tuesday night totaled 5,412 ballots for a 26.8 percent turnout. Reynolds had 2,640 votes and challenger Jim Hawkes of Pullman, an appraiser in the assessor’s office, totaled 1,824. In the other contested county race Sheriff Brett Myers had more than 82 percent of the votes at 4,075 to lead Adam Assenberg of Colfax who had 841 votes.     Combines are rolling throughout Whitman County with the crop outlook a little less than the last two years, according to local elevator managers. Tom Fowler, product manager with Almota Elevator in Colfax, said the quality of crops harvested so far has been good. “We thought the heat might have an effect on the quality, but the white wheat is number one,” he told the Gazette Tuesday afternoon.     Chad M. Aeschliman of Colfax was unhurt when he lost control of a grain truck on the Almota grade road about 1.3 miles north of Almota Monday, July 28, at about 3:45 p.m. According to the Washington State Patrol report, he was driving a 1986 Peterbilt 358 down the hill and the truck went off the roadway to the right.
