As winter wheat ripens for harvest, cranes continue to add pieces to some of the turbines at Palouse Wind’s 58-turbine wind farm in this vista from Highway 271 south of Rosalia. Crews have erected many of the towers for the north portion of the wind farm over the past month and have been placing naselles on their tops at a rate of about one a day for the past two weeks. Blades for the turbines are anticipated to arrive in the next couple of weeks. The wind farm is expected to be up and running by the end of the year....

The end is near for construction of the Port of Whitman’s $14 million fiber optic network link through Whitman County. Joe Poire, port executive director, reported to port commissioners at their regular meeting last Thursday, Aug. 2, that the Department of Transportation had issued its final permit, clearing the way for the strand fiber optic cable to be laid along Highway 27 from Oakesdale to Tekoa. “So the light is on at the end of the tunnel,” said Port Commissioner Tom Kammerzell. The SR 27 stretch is the last highway portion of the proje...

  • Port signs over Wilma utilities

    Joe Smillie, Gazette Reporter|Aug 9, 2012

The Port of Whitman County is getting out of the water business. Port commissioners approved a contract at their regular meeting last Thursday, Aug. 2, that would transfer the port’s water and sewer systems to the Asotin County Public Utilities District. The district will use them to provide services to the tenants at the Wilma Industrial Park. The move means rates will likely go down for most port tenants, said Debbie Snell, port properties and development manager. Most tenants at Wilma are served with four-inch metered hook-ups. The port char... Full story

  • Pastor’s Corner

Faith produces many things. One of those things is prayer. Not so much the “God help me” prayers, which can be reactionary, but the “Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret” prayers. That was the title of one of my favorite books when I was about 12 years old. Judy Blume wrote a book about a girl whose mother was raised Christian, whose father was raised Jewish, and who herself was raised nothing. Even so, she talked to God. Not just requests or thanks but actually talked to God about what was going on in her life. Blume doesn’t have God talking...

  • Bruce Cameron

    Aug 9, 2012

    W. Bruce Cameron Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2007. Most women I know like to go to spas, where they are pampered and catered to. Men, on the other hand, think it’s silly to spend all that money on something that should be provided free by their wives. In fact, most men I know would be baffled to hear that women can achieve a state of ecstasy by having seaweed rubbed in their faces. To give a male joy, the only thing he wants in his face is beer, beef and baseball. Now, if you’re like most people, you’r...

It’s hard enough for employers to cope with hundreds of new regulations passed each year, added to the tens of thousands of regulations already on the books. But now, agencies are adding insult to injury by imposing standards that are impossible to meet. The Small Business Administration estimates employers spend $1.75 trillion dollars a year complying with federal regulations, a burden that falls heaviest on small businesses, America’s job engine. The SBA reports it costs small employers more than $10,500 per employee to comply with federal re...

I CONFESS that I turned the television set off and hit the sack as the Andorra athletes were marching into the stadium for the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics. I knew there were 90 some countries yet to follow with the United States near the end and Paul McCartney as the piece de resistance of the finale, but I was already bored stiff. England had a tough act to follow in being expected to if not exceed, at least match the splendor of what China did but I expected better. Some of the best movies ever made have been English films and s...

  • Gordon Forgey

    Aug 9, 2012

Something special happened this week, and it had nothing to do with the Olympics. Nor was it in London. Actually, it was 350 million miles away. It was the landing of the Curiosity Mars Rover. The Curiosity rover itself is an amazing piece of equipment, able to perform a variety of scientific experiments. Its delivery on Mars was even more amazing. First, the rocket launch from Earth to Mars was precise, and the module entered the Martian atmosphere as planned. There it plummeted to the surface at speeds up to 13,000 miles an hour. A heat... Full story
