  • Colfax School District schedules meeting for fall sports Aug. 18

    Official start of the 2015-16 sports year will be Tuesday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. with the fall sports meeting in the school auditorium. Students who plan to participate in football, volleyball, cross country, junior high football and junior high girls basketball should attend the session. This year the athletic department is using the Skyward software program for sport and activity registration.   • County building permits mark quarterly gain

    Numbers for Whitman County building permits show a jump in valuation at the conclusion of the second quarter of 2015. Dan Gladwill, County Building Inspector, presented the numbers to County Commissioners Monday. A total of 49 building permits were issued with two pending. Inspections totaled 82. Total evaluation was $12,023,738 compared $3,067,729 for second quarter 2014. Total fees collected was $86,448 compared to last last year’s $38,501 for second quarter.     The Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport Runway Realignment Project is set to begin soon, with the initial construction phase to include the construction of the required off-site wetland/stream mitigation site. The selected site stretches 113.6 acres and is located along the banks of the South Fork of the Palouse River, about two and one half miles southeast of the Colfax City limits.   • Mike Jones named new Garfield-Palouse principal

    Mike Jones is the new principal of Garfield-Palouse High School. A longtime teacher and interim principal last year for LaCrosse High School, Jones started Monday, taking over for Tim Coles, who unexpectedly retired in July after suffering a heart attack. Jones, a 1993 graduate of Washtucna High School, received his administrative credentials in 2013 from Eastern Washington University.   • Mark Brown returns to Colfax grid staff

    Mark Brown, who has been in the Colfax football coaching lineup in the past, will return this fall to coach the offensive and defensive lines. That assignment will be part of the job done by longtime assistant coach Craig Culbertson who retired at the end of last season. Coach Mike Morgan said the other coaching assignments have been changed to cover other parts of Culbertson’s assignments with the team.     5 Colfax graduate Morgan Willson will be a senior at WSU this fall. Morgan Willson, a 2012 graduate of Colfax High School who is now a member of the WSU women’s cross country team, will have a unique opportunity to compete at the college level this fall in her hometown.     Colfax Golf Club course will be converted to a site for college sports competition twice this fall when the WSU cross country program hosts a home meet Sept. 1 and the big Pac-12 race Oct. 30.     The Farm Service Agency may be able to provide relief for Whitman County farmers who are experiencing financial losses related to the hot summer temperatures and subsequent drought.     A member of the Eastern Washington National Guard Honor Guard salutes Monica Peters of Pullman at the Oakesdale Cemetery Aug. 9 at the conclusion of a memorial for her great uncle.
