  • Contractors take pre-bid tour of county building

    Bidders from eight firms inspect county building. Eight contractors took to the top of the county-owned building which last housed Greg’s Electric at Main and Island streets in Colfax Monday to inspect the roof. The inspection followed a call for bids on replacing the roof. Bob Reynolds, Whitman County facilities manager, said the roof has leaked for years, and the repairs are necessary for a future remodeling of the building to house the county’s elections office.   • Threshing bee will add display of vintage tractors

    Owners of vintage tractors will be encouraged to participate in the Palouse Empire Threshing Bee this year. The bee is again slated for Labor Day, Sept. 7, at the field across for the fairground at Mockonema. Most of the threshing will be done with horses, a push header, and stationary threshing machine. Tom Hennigar of St. John, one of the organizers of the event, said he hopes to get out flyers to alert owners of the opportunity to display their tractors.   • Railroad signal sounds off and won’t stop

    The railroad crossing signal on the south end of Main Street in Colfax sounded off Tuesday night and continued to sound off for over 90 minutes while Whitcom dispatchers scrambled to locate a person who could stop it. The railroad crossing on that end of Main has essentially been out of use since the Colfax-Pullman railroad link was cut off by the South Palouse River fire.     Judge: ‘Stay out of LaCrosse’ Sean Lee of Lewiston, who was found tied up on Main Street in LaCrosse Friday night when deputies arrived at the scene to investigate an attempted robbery, was ordered Monday in a first court appearance to stay out of LaCrosse and not have contact with the LaCrosse residents who tied him up. Judge Doug Robinson set the bail amount for pre-trial release at $25,000 and added the “stay out” in the event Lee posts bail.   • Fifth Rosalia ‘cycle rally’ kicks off new format

    Thousands of motorcycles are expected to be scattered throughout Rosalia this weekend, as the town will host its fifth motorcycle rally. This year’s edition will be modified from previous rallies. “It’s all coming together,” said Rita Crowl with the Rosalia Motorcycle Association. “It’ll be fun. It’s always fun.” In prior years, the rally has taken place on closed off downtown streets.   • Big August rain shuts down harvest

    Stalled by Friday’s rain, a combine sits in a field beneath a mist-covered Kamiak Butte. Friday’s storm dropped up to an inch of rain around the county and set harvest back at least three days. Just in time for this year’s motorcycle rally, a Spokane family has opened up a grocery store in Rosalia. Garth and Song Hill opened up the renovated Empire Foods Monday, giving Rosalia a grocery store for the first time since the previous owners shut it down in November.     Escapee Christopher Davidson is finally captured and on way to jail. A manhunt that lasted over 12 hours around Colfax ended Monday at about 2:30 p.m. when Christopher Allen Davidson, 24, a fugitive from Oregon, was arrested on Railroad Ave., across the railroad tracks from the Perkins House in the Brown’s Addition section of Colfax. Davidson, who fled from a vehicle on Highway 26 in north Colfax at about 2 a.m. Monday, had been spotted several times by officers and residents in the early morning hours.
