  • Speed checks on River Road

    Colfax police will be performing emphasis speed check patrols on the North Palouse River Road after receiving complaints from residents of high-speed traffic in the area. Crews from Atlas Sand and Gravel laid oil on the road last Wednesday, Aug. 18, to suppress dust. Public Works Director Andy Rogers said high speed traffic on the freshly oiled road could create large chuckholes. Posted speed limit for the road, which was annexed into the city in 2006, is 25 miles per hour....

  • Colfax hires Fulfs, McAlister for math

    Two math teachers have been picked to fill the vacancies left by the two teachers who resigned in early August from the Colfax school district. Colfax substitute teacher Carey Fulfs was hired, along with Kenny McAlister, a Louisiana man who moved here with his wife so she can study for a doctorate degree at Washington State University.   • Pool to close Sunday

    Daytime swim sessions at the Colfax swim pool were shut down through Friday. Pool Manager Connie Ellis said the start of classes at WSU this week left the pool without enough lifeguards. Ellis said evening swims will likely be open because lifeguards will return from Pullman to staff the pool. The pool will be open for day swims this weekend, Aug. 28 and 29.   • Rape case against Muskthel dropped

    Charges of attempted rape against a Walla Walla man were dismissed in Whitman County Superior Court Aug. 18. Robert Muskthel was charged with attempted second degree rape for an incident that occurred in a bathroom stall at Stubblefields Bar in Adams Mall on College Hill in Pullman Oct. 10, 2009. Defense Attorney Tim Esser of Pullman requested the state drop the charge after resting his case in Muskthel's trial. He contended the witness contradicted earlier testimony that said she was incapacitated by alcohol during the alleged rape attempt.... Full story

  • Colfax fire crews respond to 4 calls outside city limits

    City fire crews responded to four calls outside of city limits in the last month, according to a report given to the city council at its Aug. 16 meeting. Lt. Tim Tingley told the council four calls were answered by city crews outside of the confines of the city. One of those was a mutual aid call, while firefighters were dispatched to incident locations that turned out to be just outside city limits on the other three.   • Election count updated

    County election workers ran an updated count Friday morning of ballots received via mail after the Aug. 17 primary election day. The new count added 2,231 to the tally, bringing the total to 7,818, or a 41 percent return on the 19,227 mailed out. Incumbent Auditor Eunice Coker held onto a strong lead over challenger Esther Wilson, 77 percent to 22 percent. State Rep. Joe Schmick kept an 82 percent to 16 percent lead over Glen Stockwell.   • School gives green light to go “green”

    The “green” movement may soon reach the Colfax school district. School board members gave the go-ahead for an energy company to assess the potential for energy-conserving projects in the two district buildings at Monday’s board meeting. For a limited time, the state’s Department of Commerce and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction are funding up to $100 million for energy-conserving renovations in local school districts.     Total cost for lawyers to defend Whitman County Commissioners Pat O’Neill and Greg Partch against recall proceedings last month was $19,632. Fees billed by O’Neill’s attorney, Edward Turner of the Stamper Rubens firm of Spokane was $10,760. Partch’s attorney, Brian Werst, with K&L Gates, charged the county $8,872. The commissioners hired outside attorneys after Prosecutor Denis Tracy recused himself from representing them.   • Last train to Pullman heads down Palouse River tracks

    A W&I engine loads up flat cars to take them away on tracks just west of the Barney Buckley residence on the South Palouse River Road east of Colfax. What could very well have been the last train to run on the state-owned railroad between Colfax and Pullman rolled out Wednesday morning.
