    Larry L. Dickerson A memorial service for Larry Lee Dickerson, 73, former St. John mayor and long-time manager of St. John Telephone Co., was Wednesday afternoon in the St. John Community Center. Mr. Dickerson died last Friday, Aug. 21, 2009. Born June 9, 1936, to Hollis and Lady Fae Dickerson at the family home in Ewan, he attended Ewan School until eighth grade and then attended St. John High School. He graduated with the class of 1954.     Grand total of reader hours logged by youngsters in the Whitman County Library’s summer reading program was 5,280 hours. The summer program enrolled 528 youngsters around the county, according to Sherri Miller, youth services manager. Participants who finished the reading requirements received goody bags filled with prizes and coupons along with a completion certificate.     Tekoa Country Kids Daycare Center’s fifth annual Trike-A-Thon was Thursday, Aug. 20. The children learned safety rules for riding trikes and bikes during the week.     A fire swept through a wheat field north of Belmont Tuesday afternoon, destroying about 50 acres of wheat and 150 acres of stubble.     The campground at Kamiak Butte was closed until further notice Sunday, Aug. 23, because the fire danger is now too risky, said Parks Director Tim Myers. With the late summer heat spells having dried up the underbrush and trees, a fire by a camper is too much of a risk now, Myers said. “If someone decides to have a fire and a breeze comes through, it could get sparks in the trees and brush.” Myers said.
