First-year coach Justin Ziebel and the LWK Tigercats will debut a new chapter in the team’s eight-man history Friday night at their season opener at Washtucna. The T-cats will host the Wilbur/Creston Wildcats in a non-leaguer. Ziebel was appointed this year to take the head coaching slot vacated by Jeff Nelson who led the program for 19 years. Ziebel, who commutes from Ritzville, was one of the assistants on the team last year. The 2012 Tigercats finished third in the league last year and bumped Almira-Coule-Hartline in the first playoff r...
Last year, they didn’t win a game. Their coach has never played the sport. This year, six seniors lead the St. John-Endicott football team to try to change all of that. Except the second part, as second-year head coach Steve Selk comes at football from the perspective of an observer and a broadcaster – once doing play-by-play for Colfax High games with Jim Upshaw on 1450 KCLX. The six returning seniors on Selk’s team join six other starters on a roster which gained experience last year. “At o...
The Rosalia Spartans, assembling an eight-man football team for this fall, are no longer part of the Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia combination which finished in 2012 with a playoff loss to state champion Lind-Ritzville-Sprague. Kaleb Madison, coach of last year’s TOR team, will lead Rosalia’s solo venture. “It’s been a transition for the players,” he said. “But the great thing about it is that they’re fast and they’re smart.” Madison went on to say that while the eight-man game is a little different, it’s also much the same. “The way the players look...

Beginning Nov. 1, Washington state will discontinue its reciprocity with other states or countries for Sno-Park permits. Out-of-state Sno-Park permits will not longer be valid in Washington. Snowmobile riders and others visiting Washington will be required to purchase a permit from the Washington State Parks and Recreation. Cost of a one-day permit is $20 and a seasonal permit is $40. However, state licensing agents will issue one permit, at no fee, with each snowmobile license renewal, including mail-in and online renewals. They will write...
The Farmington beaver situation has returned, in higher numbers than before. Last January, a suspected beaver in Pine Creek resulted in city officials breaking up two dams to keep the waterway from flooding, while a Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator was called in to assess the situation. The man, David Early, certified by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), assured Mayor Ron Dugan that the beaver(s) had left town. “If that was true, they’re back now,” said Dugan, who on Au...
Wheat and barley harvest is nearly finished county-wide, along with peas and lentils. Garbanzo beans harvest has barely begun. Steve Van Vleet, WSU Regional Extension Specialist, Associate Professor of Agricultural and Natural Resources, based in Colfax, said from the east part of the county to the south, winter and spring wheat yields have been average to good. Test weights also have been good. But from the north to the west portions of the county, farmers are reporting test weights are average to below average, which means crop prices get...
Whitman County commissioners now want Whitcom, the emergency 911 dispatch services agency, to get its own attorney for any legal services the agency might need and to pay for those services. Whitman County Prosecutor Denis Tracy told commissioners Monday morning that since the agency was formed in 2004, he has been the attorney to provide legal services for the agency. Since the agency’s interlocal agreements are being redone, he said he is not comfortable having an agreement that says he must provide all legal services. “It doesn’t requi...

Columbia County will lose projected sales tax revenue that had been anticipated from the Tucannon River Wind Farm because of a state budget bill granting sales and use tax exemptions to wind energy. With the sales tax exemption, Columbia County stands to lose tax revenue. Whitman County officials say this county will not be affected. Columbia County Treasurer Audrey McLean said the county commissioners planned on getting revenue that was on construction of the newest wind farm. She said the Tucannon Wind Farm has more than 100 wind turbines,...
Martin Hall Juvenile Detention Facility’s future looked bleak a year ago because of declining revenue and departure of Spokane County from the cooperative which operates the facility. However, during the first three quarters of the year, Martin’s financial standing has improved. Lincoln County Commissioner Scott Hutsell, chairman of the multi-county Martin board, said the hall at present is doing “fairly well.” Late last year, it was uncertain if Martin Hall would remain open when Spokane County pulled out of the group of counties in the pro...
Superior Court Judge David Frazier Friday sentenced Bobby Bilderback to 68 months in prison, the maximum time prescribed on the state’s range, for the drug overdose death of Donavin Stapert, 17, last March 7 at Bilderback’s residence in Malden. The judge put aside a recommendation for 59.5 months and a last-minute suggestion for a drug offender’s sentencing alternative (DOSA). Bilderback, 44, pleaded guilty to two charges last Monday just before the start of a week-long jury trial. He was convi...
A bad sign for any harvest crew on the Palouse is the presence of visitors bearing rain umbrellas. This was the case Monday morning when rain put the brakes on the Paloluse Empire Thresing Bee. The crew’s 1922 Case steam engine was fired up at about 5 a.m to build up pressure for the work day, but it was used only for a short demonstration....
