    Playing another season opener against non-league Salmon River, Idaho, Colton traveled to Riggins Sept. 1, losing 38-18. Canyon Harper led the Savages with 252 yards rushing and five touchdowns. His team took control early, scoring the first four touchdowns before Colton started to answer. Wildcats’ quarterback Parker Druffel went 36-of-55 for 414 yards in the air, throwing to a range of receivers.     Oakesdale Track Coach Cap Perry has been named by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as the 2017 Girls High School Coach of the Year for the state of Washington. Perry led his team to the state girls 1B championship in May after tying for the championship in 2016. With just one senior on the team, the girls beat out Mount Vernon Christian to take the 2017 title.     St. John/Endicott runners were grounded by smoke Tuesday when Northwest Christian called off the NE jamboree. The Eagles next run date will be next Tuesday, also at Northwest Christian. The Eagles high school team includes three boys and three girls. The girls are Allie Tollett, Guin Richmond, and Catherine Treis. The boys are Domonic Treis, Asutin Coniber, and Tray Anderson.     The St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse football team began their 2017 season with a scoring drive. Dustin Fox got loose on a 35-yard breakaway run to the Tekoa-Rosalia 12-yard line. On the next play, quarterback Trey Fleming threw to Fox in the end zone. The ball was tipped, and Fox came down with it. Touchdown S.J.E.L, 6-0.     Garfield/Palouse opened their 2017 high school football season Sept. 1 with 32-8 home win over non-league Troy. Quarterback Evan Weagraff led the team, rushing for 173 yards on 24 carries and four touchdowns. He also went 7-for-8 passing for 118 yards.     With smoke covering the area and driving football teams into gyms to practice, Asotin and Colfax began looking for an alternative mode to get in Friday’s league game which had been set for Friday night on the Asotin field. Colfax athletic director Nathan Holbrook reported late Tuesday the two teams were close to booking a game Thursday night in the UI’s Kibbie Dome at Moscow.     Gonzaga Prep, one of the Spokane GSL teams which dented the Colfax volleyball record in the past has been slated to visit Colfax tonight in a non-league round. The match will be the first home show for the Bulldogs who opened their season last week with a pair of sweeps.     The Port of Whitman County has put out a request for statements of qualifications related to consulting and engineering service for the Port of Whitman Business Air Center on Airport Road in Colfax.     The Port of Whitman County two weeks ago voted to give $500 for the RiverFest event slated for Sept. 30 at Granite Lake Park in Clarkston. The event is planned jointly between the cities of Clarkston and Lewiston, as well as their chambers. The ports of Clarkston and Lewiston also sponsor the event and approached the Port of Whitman to donate $500 to help with the funding for it this year.     The possible tear-down of Uniontown’s “pigeon house” is on hold as the town awaits review of a bid by Roach Construction of Genesee.     Jose A. Tecuatl, former resident advisor at WSU’s Stimson Hall, pleaded not guilty in superior court Friday morning to three charges of threatening to bomb or injure property.     Whitman County has the 2018 budget well underway, and meetings between department heads and the Board of County Commissioners will be ongoing for the next two weeks. Gary Petrovich, county administrator, informed the commissioners last week he has been reviewing the submitted budgets from each department. All departments have turned in their budgets, and he is reviewing them in conjunction with County Auditor Eunice Coker.
