Last season’s flu shot was not very effective at preventing the flu. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people who got the shot were just 19 percent less likely to visit the doctor for flu than people who...
8 years ago The Commoner Sept. 5, 1890 With this, the first issue of the St. John Header, we come before the public filling a new sphere. Believing that a newspaper is as essential to the growth and prosperity of a city and its surrounding country, as any other line of business, and failing in our attempts to get an experienced man to establish one here, we have taken it upon our shoulders to furnish our citizens with the long looked for and much talked of newspaper. While we are wielding the pen, we will do all we can to promote the...

His brother, their uncle, who retired from farming, still lives in Overly. The burial took place Sept. 2 which would have been their parents’ 59th wedding anniversary. Dick and Helen...

Five new wood deck planks will be installed on Kerns Bridge, above, before Cottonwood Road and the bridge are vacated. Below, landowner Mike McCann confers with Public Works Director Mark Storey as the county commissioners look on Tuesday. After a week waiting on more information, Whitman County commissioners voted Tuesday to vacate a section of Cottonwood Road/Kerns Bridge near Thornton. The subject first came before commissioners a week earlier in a public hearing in which two landowners conte...
On September 4, the State Supreme Court derailed Washington’s nascent charter school movement when it ruled that charter school Initiative 1240 is unconstitutional. Approved by voters in 2012, I-1240 allowed up to 40 charter schools at a rate of eight per year. The initiative specified that low-income, at-risk students be given priority and charter schools were required to meet the same rigorous certification, performance and teacher accreditation standards as traditional schools. Nevertheless, the state teachers’ union sued to overturn the ini...
Pullman firefighters Sept. 2 responded to a report of smoke pouring out of the Elmhurst Apartments in the 400 block of Oak Street on College Hill. When crews arrived at the building, they found about a dozen residents had evacuated. Smoke was coming out of two windows in apartment E. They discovered the source of the smoke was an oven in the apartment. The investigation determined a resident of the apartment, who was not present when the fire crew arrived, had left after he had started baking potatoes. The fire crew ventilated the three story...
Farmington’s city council voted to repeal its fireworks ban at their Aug. 17 council meeting. The ban, which had been in place for 75 years, was not enforced. “In the state of Washington, there are already laws governing fireworks,” said mayor Dave Baker. The matter came up on the Fourth of July this year because of the dry conditions, which led to residents gathering downtown at Third Street by the fire station to light fireworks. “Because of the weather we had, we reminded everyone about the ordinance,” said Baker. “Right there was a perfe...
Pet peeve answer Please allow this letter to answer the question submitted within the Pet Peeve section of the Sept. 3, 2015, edition of the Whitman County Gazette. Specifically, the question stated, “How many of the ‘non-elected’ general population were even aware of the opportunity to possibly participate in a lucrative Moscow/Pullman airport wetlands offset?” For the Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport (PMRA) Runway Re-alignment Project, the National Environmental Policy Act Environmental Assessment (EA) Process was initiated in Septemb...
Anyone hoping for a winter filled with lots of snow to offset some of the effects of the current drought situation might be in for some disappointment. The 2016 Old Farmer’s Almanac has been released with the winter weather forecast. While a mild and dry winter might be in store for eastern Washington, that does not mean it will not be cold. It will still be a good time to lace up the old boots, bring out the winter coats and gloves, make some hot chocolate and sit by the fire. The Almanac also predicts cold temperatures throughout much of t...
The rise of Donald Trump is, in part, a function of a vacuum. He is thriving in a Republican field that is large, talented and, so far, underwhelming. To paraphrase Bruce Springsteen, there's 17 candidates and nothing on. Except Donald Trump. Now, this has much to do with the media, and with Trump's unique qualities as a showman. He has the advantage of not caring about anything, apparently -- the facts, his reputation or, ultimately, winning the presidency. In consequence, he is a free man. Yet no speech, no policy proposal, no argument,...
To show you how clueless I am: I thought the term "anchor babies" was a harmless way of referring to the very young kids of TV news readers. Now I discover that it's a pejorative way to describe infants born to immigrant parents in the United States who automatically gain U.S. citizenship, a birthright guaranteed by the Constitution's 14th Amendment. There are some really good, fairly obvious reasons for birthright, having to do with slaves and fairness, but that hasn't dissuaded Donald Trump from pandering to the GOP hater base by turning it...
The image is disturbing. It is of a young boy, a mere toddler, face down at water’s edge. He is dead and alone. He and others in his family had drowned trying to escape the violence in Syria. This tragic little figure was just one of thousands who have died fleeing the Middle East. To escape the wars and violence, they face the dangers of a sea crossing, unscrupulous profiteers and even violence among the refugees themselves. Some of the refugees are seeking a new life in Europe. Others just hope for temporary sanctuary from the confused f...

The Timerwolves, who have just one returning senior, took the non-league match 25-22, 25-22 and 26-24. Naomi Meredith, one of two freshman starters, ran seven serves with two aces to open the match. Th...
