    President Barack Obama broadcast a speech to schools around the nation Tuesday morning, but because of a controversy over the content of his message, not all local students got to hear it.   • Belts transfer steam power

    Power from the Palouse Empire Threshing Bee’s Case steam engine is transferred to its Red River stationary thresher by a large belt Monday. Belts and chains link the thresher’s internal mechanisms off the main drive belt from the steam engine. Water and firewood are consumed by the steamer. Cut wheat is fed into the top of the thresher from header box wagons. When it all works together, grain and chaff come out of the thresher. Charles Knaack is the operator. More photos on Page 7....

  • WSU flu count climbs

    WSU health officials reported Tuesday having been contacted by more than 2,500 students who had influenza-like symptoms since the start of the fall semester. Two cases of the swine flu were confirmed in Whitman County residents by the State Public Health Laboratory last Thursday. The samples were from a 19-year-old male and a 24-year -old female, both from Pullman.     NOTICE OF A PLANNING COMMISSION PUBLIC HEARING FOR A COMMERCIAL WIND TURBINE ORDINANCE Whitman County proposes to add a new chapter to its zoning codes, Chapter 19.61 – Commercial Wind Energy Facilities, along with related amendments to existing zoning chapters 19.03 – Definitions, 19.10 – Agricultural District, and 19.58 – Communications and Utility Facilities. Related amendments will also be made to the Comprehensive Plan.
