    Colfax Bulldogs will hit the road south Friday to open their regular season against the Asotin Panthers. The Bulldogs will make the road trip after rolling to Lind last Friday to play in the annual grid jamboree. The jamboree has become a sort of pre-season testing ground for the Colfax football squad, and it became more so Friday when Colfax tried out its new pistol offense.     In November, Washington voters will decide if foods that are genetically modified should contain that information on labels. Initiative 522 requires labels on foods that use genetic engineered ingredients. Howard Vlieger, a farmer from Iowa, spoke to a sparse audience last Thursday afternoon in the Community Building at the fairground about the harmful effects of Genetically Modified Organisms, particularly in grains.     The Whitman County Humane Society has some unusual pets for adoption. Twelve bearded dragon lizards arrived at the shelter in July and nine are now up for adoption, according to Brittany Wiltz, humane society director. “We helped a local family who had too many pets,” Wiltz said. The dragons, or “beardies,” weren’t in the best of condition, most of them underweight, and one had to be euthanized.     The Jennings Elementary School office is nearing completion, after a few delays keeping it unfinished and passing the goal of opening Aug. 15.   • Harrison Electric vehicles burglarized

    Early Tuesday morning, several vehicles belonging to Harrison Electric in Colfax were burglarized on Sumner Street, according to information from the Colfax Police Department. Tools and miscellaneous items were taken from the vehicles. Surveillance video shows a white male approximately 6’-3” tall with a slender build breaking windows on the vehicles and removing items.     The Friends of Whitman County Library is sponsoring a Book Sale Blowout in the Colfax Library. To clear out a backlog of items, extra tables have been set up and many items reduced to half price. Hours of the sale are Mondays through Wednes-days from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. All proceeds benefit library programs and projects countywide.     St. John School District voters will decide in November on a capital projects levy proposal that will pay for the remaining heating system replacement for the school. According to Superintendent Gary Wargo, the cost to complete the heating replacement project is estimated at $969,000. The levy would raise the money over three years beginning in 2014.     Crews were at work last Thursday morning at Endicott to remove large tree branches which were downed along the playground in front of the Endicott School. The trees were hit by strong winds which swamped Endicott during Wednesday night’s storm, Sept. 4. Trees and limbs were reportedly downed in many areas of the town.
