The changing flags on Main Street in Colfax have caused quite a stir. In the past, the local VFW and American Legion posts mounted flags along the main drag in town for patriotic holidays. It was a lot of work. Most of the members were veterans of World War II, and the job of festooning Main with flags got to be too much for them. SJE junior Heather Siegel led a field of 52 girls Saturday to win the Chief Timothy Island loop race along the river. Siegel clocked 17.43 in the course which covers 2.6 miles around two loops on the island. The Eagles took the team honor with a 43 low point score. Tekoa grad Susannah Scaroni returned this week from London, where she recorded an eighth-place finish in T-54 division of the women’s marathon at the 2012 Paralympics. Scaroni finished with a time of 1:58.37 in the wheelchair marathon event Sunday. The course was down many of the same narrow, windy streets used in the Olympic games last month, though it was re-routed around some of the cobblestone streets. “It was a beautiful course. Colfax football will enter uncharted territory on their own turf Friday when they host the Coeur d’Alene jayvees in a non-leaguer at Schmuck Park. The appearance by the junior Vikings is part of a move by Bulldog Caoch Mike Morgan to add a few new wrinkles to the early season run for the Colfax grid program. Coeur d’Alene is expected to bring 40 to 50 sophomores for their jayvee entry. They are part of a Viking program which has won two Idaho 5A titles for two years. Palouse Empire Rodeo brought in approximately 150 wranglers over a three-day show at Mockonema. The rodeo added $500 to the pot money for each event. Spectators at the Sunday go-round got to see three bumps in the team roping event with Bob Thompson and Teejay Brown taking the top money of $739 with a 4.74 time. The second-hand store, now in its permanent location in the foyer of the new community center building, first opened at Palouse Days 2002. Its former location was where Open Eye Consignment is now. A new law which would prohibit garbage collected in Whitman County from being hauled for initial disposal outside of the county borders will be voted on by county commissioners next week. The “flow control” ordinance has been proposed by the county’s solid waste department, headed by Public Works Director Mark Storey. An early-morning fire at 307 E. Thorn Street Sunday did extensive damage to the residence and left a family of four homeless. The family was asleep in the residence when the fire started, but they managed to escape as smoke filled the house. Colfax Fire Chief Ralph Walter said the family includes Eric and Charlotte La Fleur and their daughters, Sarah 6, and Daisy Belle 3. They are now being housed at the Siesta Motel by the Red Cross. Whitman County could face as much as $5 million in additional interest payments if it misses out on a state loan to help build infrastructure at the long-proposed Hawkins shopping center on this side of the state line. Retiring next April after 28 years with the Palouse Emergency Medical Services, Gloria Hodges will be this year’s Palouse Days grand marshal. She has served as EMS coordinator for the past 15 years. Palouse Empire Fair booked another strong run at Mockonema for the 63rd edition of the four-day show.
