Tapestry singers seek new director, funds Tapestry, the area women’s chorale group which normally performs concert tours during the holiday season and in May, has been seeking a director to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Dale Forrey. The group is also seeking sponsorship funds to pay a director to lead the group. Heaping doses of calves, corn dogs and a carnival were had by all at the 61st edition of the Palouse Empire Fair last weekend. While final attendance numbers were not available by press time, Fair Manager Bob Reynolds said Tuesday the fair’s attendance was likely up from last year’s total of 24,000. “Every booth was jam-packed. A 200,000-gallon tank of ammonium phosphate fertilizer burst at McGregor Company’s Mockonema manufacturing plant Monday afternoon. The rupture gushed approximately 100,000 gallons of the liquid fertilizer onto the ground and across the Endicott Road. The rupture occurred at 2:30 p.m., when employees were mixing ammonia and uric acid to make the ammonium phosphate. No one was injured when the tank began gushing fluid. Endicott’s adult summer reading program had 18 participants who turned in the completed book reviews. Aaron Krantz won a drawing for a $20 gift certificate to use at the Endicott Food Center. Librarian Caroline Morasch reported total attendance at the six summer reading programs was 110. Smith Bros. grain schute, located at Smith’s Landing, five miles above Wawawai, commenced operations a couple of weeks ago. The schute is 3,000 feet long, has a capacity of ten bushels a minute, and is supplied with a cleaner which removes the dust and most of the straw from grain passing through it. The deadline for tighter regulations on pit bull dogs in Tekoa passed Sept. 1, and the two weeks since have been more or less calm. Washington State Department of Transportation announced Monday it will chip seal almost 25 miles of state highway in western Whitman County next year with funds left over from projects that cost less than estimated. Work will be done in the spring to chip seal State Route 26 from Dusty to Colfax and eight miles of State Route 127, the Central Ferry Highway, from Dusty south to the Church Hill Road intersection. LaCrosse farmer Steve Camp was awarded a $28,000 grant from the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service to further his on-farm production of biodiesel. Camp’s grant was one of four of the agency’s Conservation Innovation Grants awarded this year. Camp has for the past two years planted camelina, a genetic cousin of canola, and has pressed the harvested seed to use the oil to make biodiesel he then uses on his farm.
