  • Colfax school staff, parents hash out first grade class size

    Jeslyn Lemke|Sep 16, 2010

A record low enrollment for first graders has Colfax school staff and parents struggling with a class size that could be too large for one teacher but too small for two. Staff are seeking options to downsize the existing class of 28 or change teaching duties. The total first grade class in Colfax was predicted by the administration to be 24 students this year; 28 ended up enrolling. The extra four students stretch the teacher-to-student ratio and parents at a school board meeting Monday protested the size, saying it strains learning and...

Final score was 38-19. The win put the Bulldogs in gear for their home opener this Friday when Davenport arrives to start the league season. • My favorite recipes – Melt In Your Mouth Chocolate Contest

    Sep 16, 2010

Judging chocolate isn’t just about sampling a variety of yummy desserts and picking a favorite. It’s about carefully dissecting the flavor, crumb texture and consistency of each piece. It’s about scrutinizing the appeal, both to the eye and the tongue. Then all these factors have to be given a number on a scale which will eventually determine the best. While judging chocolate can be meticulous work, that was the task myself and two other judges set out to do for the Melt in Your Mouth Chocolate Contest at the Palouse Empire Fair this year....

  • Palouse Grain Growers will celebrate 80th year

    Jeslyn Lemke|Sep 16, 2010

Standing in the dusty, shadowed driveway of the crib elevator for Palouse Grain Growers, it is easy to feel the years in the place. With a worn wooden floor and the thick film of grain dust that blankets everything in sight, this elevator bares the visible stamp of time as Palouse Grain Growers co-op celebrates its 80th anniversary. Assistant manager Rick Wekenman rides up in the manlift. The manlift can shoot 70 feet up to the rafters of the Palouse Grain Grower’s crib elevator. A celebration will be Saturday, Sept. 18, of Palouse Days to h...

  • Word on the street – Sept. 16, 2010

    Sep 16, 2010

Do you think all government records and meetings should be open to the public? Abby Muir, Colfax “I don’t think people should have access to all of it. I think they need access to some of it.” Tony (no last name given), Colfax “Yeah.” Why? “Because the public should know.” Arlene Hatley, Colfax “We’re part of the government, so why not? We pay taxes.” John Cox, Washtucna “I guess I feel everyone has the right to know what the government is doing. They sure want to know what we’re doing.” Rodney Nelson, Colfax “Yeah.” Why? “I feel like... Full story

    Sep 16, 2010

These reports are from the previous four issues of the Daily Bulletin in Colfax. They are reprinted here for the benefit of Gazette readers who reside outside of Colfax. Some accounts have been updated. Lights out for Colfax A Colfax police survey Monday night identified 12 streetlights which are out. Five of the malfunctioning lights are located on Main Street. • Letters – Sept. 16, 2010

    Sep 16, 2010

Selective reading The people criticizing Mr. Whitten’s attempt to recall two county commissioners must be very selective in their reading of the newspaper. The newspaper publisher, as well as the county prosecutor, both explained how the Open Public Meeting Law was violated. What is it about public officials breaking a law that some of you do not understand? Government should operate in the open. Violators of this fundamental principle should be held accountable, no matter the cost. Rick Kiesz, Thornton Backs Romeyn I was shocked to read a r...

  • W. Bruce Cameron – Attack of the marshmallow-eating alligator

    Sep 16, 2010

Back in the 1980s, my grandparents, Dick and Emily, moved to Florida because they wanted a better climate to argue in. They had one of those relationships where they fought so much they couldn’t even agree on what they disagreed on. Their little home in Florida was a few dozen yards from a boggy pond that kept trying to evolve into a swamp. Dick liked to go down to the water’s edge and feed marshmallows to the small alligator who lived there, probably hoping that one day it would grow large enough that he could feed it Emily. Emily would stand...

  • Don Brunell – Feds killing energy projects and jobs

    Sep 16, 2010

President Obama says two of his biggest priorities are jobs and renewable energy. Perhaps he should tell his regulators to help, not hinder, energy projects because some of their most recent actions are killing them and their accompanying jobs. In the process, they re making us even more reliant on foreign oil. Historically, America s energy sector has been one of the strongest drivers of our economy. The oil and gas industry alone employs more than nine million people. But that industry is under siege. In the wake of the Gulf oil spill, the...

  • Adele Ferguson – Are Dems using courts in move to derail Dino Rossi?

    Sep 16, 2010

WELL, LOOK who got a write-up in the Wall Street Journal. Our own Dino Rossi, in a tantalizing top of the page editorial entitled “A Washington State Smear Campaign.” “Desperate political environments tend to inspire desperate political tactics,” writes Kimberley A. Strassel. “In Washington State, liberal activists are desperate.” Dino attracted the Journal’s attention in his race to unseat U.S. Sen. Patty Murray because if this turns out to be a “wave election” on Nov. 2, meaning a loss of over 20 seats by the Democrat majority, our man...

  • Opinion – A little bit of history

    Sep 16, 2010

It was a long time ago when Cuba, basically a corporate holding of the United States since the Spanish American War, was swept with revolutionary fervor. The old government was overthrown. Cuba’s new leader, Fidel Castro, tried to find allies and support. Spurned by most countries, he sought support from the Communist Block. This was in the 1950’s, and the Cold War was raging. The United States and Cuba became adversaries and enemies. During John F. Kennedy’s presidency, America covertly supported an invasion of the country, and the Sovie...

  • Lancer theft, point enough to stop hawks

    Sep 16, 2010

Offensive miscues wiped out a strong defensive effort in Tekoa/Oakesdale/Rosalia’s 7-6 road loss to rival Liberty Friday night at the Lancers’ field. The Nighthawk defense blanked the Lancer’s offensive attack, with Liberty’s only points coming on an interception return with 7.5 seconds remaining in the first half. “That one was on the coach,” said TOR Coach Ken Lindgren on his decision not to stall out the clock at the end of the half. “I should have had them take a knee or run a dive into the line.” TOR had the ball deep in their own terri...

  • Colfax, Rosalia schools to launch youth courts

    Joe Smillie|Sep 16, 2010

Two Whitman County schools this year will give their students the ability to act as a sentencing panel for students who violate school rules. Robert Russell, a part-time teacher and athletics and activities director at Garfield Middle School, has set up Youth Courts in Colfax and Rosalia high schools. Russell said the idea of the court is to give students a clearer picture of the inner workings of the American justice system. “One of the things I tell my eighth graders is the closest to the constitution we ever get is serving on a jury,” sai...
