Some time Congressman Joe Wilson’s (R from South Carolina) outburst “You Lie” during President Obama’s address to Congress Sept 9th was understandable. The Republicans were tuned in to their former president, George Bush, who seldom answered a question or made a statement that wasn’t a lie. They expect the president to lie. However, they will have to get used to the upstanding, dedicated to the truth, and honest president that now graces the White House. It may take some time. Joan Harris, Pullman Health care Regarding Adele Ferguson...
Brandy and Andrew Davis Their commute is 38 miles one way. They are tag-teaming a full-time schedule of hours, and they are trying to manage care for their three children. When the couple who opened Oakesdale Café last week was asked how they were going to keep this all together, Brandy and Andrew Davis both had the same answer. “With God standing behind us, who can be against us?” Andrew responded quickly in an interview with the Gazette Sept. 11. They opened for business last Wednesday, Sept. 9. The duo said they will serve home cooking for b...
When President Obama addressed Congress and the nation on the need for health-care reform, he brushed off medical malpractice lawsuit abuse with a cursory acknowledgment of the problem. He said he doesn’t think it’s a “silver bullet” but has directed Health and Human Services Director Kathleen Sebelius to “move forward” on it. With all due respect, that doesn’t cut it. Medical malpractice should be a central tenet of this massive health-care overhaul. Brushing the problem aside only inflates the $900 billion needed to pay for the reforms over...
Question: If strikes by public school teachers are illegal, how can the Kent teachers do it and get away with it? Answer: They refuse to obey the law that says public employees have no right to strike unless they are given the right by the Legislature, which has not occurred with them. They also cling to the fact that the Legislature has not specifically denied teacher strikes. Question: Why hasn’t the Legislature done one or the other? Answer: It hasn’t OK’d strikes because there are more non-teacher voters than teachers and that would tick...

Dam breaching option of last resort The Obama Administration has come up with a plan for the restoration of the endangered and threatened salmon runs on the Columbia and Snake rivers. The plan follows much of what the Bush Administration had proposed. The fundamental difference is that the new plan holds the possibility of breaching Snake River dams if other efforts to restore the runs prove to be ineffective. Breaching the dams in the new plan is the solution of “last resort” and would require approval of Congress. The option was not part of... Full story

Because the town’s general fund has been receiving less in city assistance funds from the state, the city is considering other ways of increasing revenue. Also contributing to the revenue bind is a steep drop in the interest rates off the state investment pool where cities and towns park excess funds. Interest earning for the state Local Government Investment Pool has dropped to .45 percent from 5.2 percent i...

Swannack actually out-polled...
Ron Kile, holding microphone, explains his direct seed drill to farmers. Direct seed systems can help farmers hold down input costs by limiting the amount of fertilizer and fuel needed to plant a crop. Unfortunately, they also come with a six-figure price tag which can be a burden for farmers who already face high costs for farming equipment. Tuesday morning, the Palouse-Rock Lake Conservation District and the Pacific Northwest Direct Seed Association showed scores of farmers different types of direct seed drills can do and informed them of...
