    Wind, tree, power line, spark, seem to be the order of events for the ignition of the Babb/Malden Fire Sept. 7. According to an AP report, Avista Utilities has sighted the tree contacting a power line as the apparent start of the wildfire which destroyed most of Malden and Pine City. The utility company has not found evidence that any deficiencies in its equipment, maintenance or vegetation management caused recent fires, the company said in a statement Friday.     STEPTOE—In a rare occurrence, a vehicle hit a moose in the Steptoe area in the dark and the vehicle was not crippled or worse. Which was a good thing in this case as the vehicle was a Colfax ambulance with a patient bound for Spokane. The incident occurred about 2:30 a.m. Sept. 12.     PINE CITY—A Washington State Patrol vehicle that was claimed by the fires near Pine City is being credited with saving the life of an evacuee. The 2020 Ford Explorer ended up in the ditch to be claimed by the fire while the trooper driving it was making sure people were evacuating. According to WSP Sgt.     MALDEN—As part of the devastation of Monday’s fire in Malden, the busy community library and computing center was a complete loss. A branch of Whitman County District, the library was attached to city hall. The branch had recently reopened, after a long shutdown due to COVID-19. Prior to that closure, Malden Library was one of the most utilized locations in the system.     Jeanette Eileen (Broeckel) Nolan passed away peacefully September 10, 2020, at City View Two in Colfax, Wash. She was 83. Following a stroke in May, Jeanette was "bound and determined" to recover. She was unrelenting in her fight, but due to other complications, passed on to Heaven last Thursday where she was welcomed by Jesus and her loving family. Della was born February 20, 1944, in Dayton, Washington, to William and Hazel Bishop Hilgert. She grew up in Dayton with her three siblings and Della graduated from Dayton High School in 1962.
