Clearwater Football League junior football will play their third round in Colfax Saturday with six games slated to begin at 8 a.m.The two Colfax teams are booked for games at 11:30 a.m. and 12:40 p.m. The action will include seven teams from the Lewiston/Clarkston area, two from Pullman and two from Moscow.     The Garfield-Palouse school district’s search for a boys’ basketball coach to succeed Tim Coles continues. Coles retired this summer after 29 years and two state championships with the Vikings.     The St. John-Endicott Eagles went north to Wellpinit last Friday and the results got better as they game went on. In the process, they trailed 44-0 at the end of the third quarter, in a 44-16 loss . “Believe it or not, we are definitely making progress,” said Eagles coach Ken Gering. “We took the last three quarters in statistics.” In the first quarter, Wellpinit ran for 138 yards to the Eagles' zero.     Olivia Mellor goes up for a Bulldog serve against Mt. Spokane Colfax volleyball players roared to a five-game win over Mt. Spokane on the home court Thursday and added league wins at Kettle Falls Saturday and on the home court against neighboring Tekoa/Rosalia Tuesday.   • State unemployment rate holding steady; county rate evening out after summer rise

    For the third month in a row Washington's unemployment rate held steady at 5.3 percent, according to estimates by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The drop to 5.3 percent in June marked the lowest unemployment rate the state had seen in seven years when the previous low stood at 5.6 percent in August 2008. The state peaked in February 2010 ― the end of the employment recession in Washington ―at 10.2 percent, after having been at 4.6 percent in February 2008, when the employment recession began.   • Resolution in fatal wolf shooting case

    A resolution of the fatal wolf shooting case south of Pullman last October was reached Sept. 14 with filing of a misdemeanor charge against Jonathan Rasmussen, according to Prosecutor Denis Tracy. He also announced the misdemeanor charge would be dismissed on condition that Rassmussen pay $100 in court fees and commit no further fish or game violations over six months.   • New county transfer station closed for crane-bolt repair

    The new Whitman County transfer station is temporarily shut down in order to repair bolts holding down its crane. Two of the bolts broke off where the nuts connects, leading to the decision two weeks ago to switch operations back to the old facility.     Sara Yates' latest mural in LaCrosse depicts three horses pulling a steam engine with two fire fighters. The fire fighters are former city fire chief Bonnie Bigsby and former rural fire chief Red Martin. Sara Yates has finished another mural.     Fair veterinarian Dr. Randy McGraw of Bunchgrass Veterinary in Colfax said two fair animals died during the fair week. “We did have a couple animals die out there this year, but none of them heat-related,” McGraw said.     The Washington State Auditor’s Office recently completed an audit of Whitman County, finding significant inadequacies and deficiencies in the county’s financial practices.     Cleaning and painting of the Colfax Codger Pole has started this week by Allen Cuddy of Pullman. Crews earlier cleaned the pole and started applying the paint to the top Codger.
