Some accounts have been updated. RAIN ENDS 38-DAY DRY SPELL Rain Monday night totaled 0.14 inches at the Natural Resource Conservation Service station on the south hill in Colfax. The 0.14 was the first precipitation recorded for Colfax since Aug. 15 when a scant .06 was recorded. LaCrosse weather observer Nancy Taylor recorded a .04 rainfall on Sept. 3. That’s my job description.” These were editorial cartoonist Milt Priggee’s opening remarks last Thursday, Sept. 18, when he appeared at the United Methodist Church in Colfax. Priggee’s presentation was sponsored by the Whitman County Library and Colfax Rotary Club. Humanities Washington Speakers Bureau partnered with the library and Rotary Club to bring Priggee to Colfax.   • Pastor to thank EMTs with Colfax book signing donations

    A former pastor from Deer Park is thanking Colfax first responders for the kindnesses he experienced after a car accident. Pastor Stewart Mackey and his wife, Kathy, were traveling on a snow covered Highway 195 near the Rosalia rest stop Dec. 12, 2013, when an oncoming car hit black ice and slammed into them. Mackey will be at Main Street Books Saturday, Oct. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. signing books.   • Port okays project at Colfax airport

    Port of Whitman County commissioners Sept. 18 approved a capital improvement plan for the port’s Business Air Center at Colfax. The $2.3 million project slated for 2015 includes runway construction, lighting and taxiway rehabilitation among other improvements. Debbie Snell, port properties and development manager, said the FAA will pay 90 percent of the cost of the project, state DOT five percent and the port will pay the remaining five percent.     Lindsay Webber of Colfax has been named grand prize winner of the “Stand & Be Heard Anthem Singing Contest” sponsored by FMC Corp. Webber will receive the $5,000 grand prize after being named one of four finalists after receiving an initial $5,000 prize. The grand prize winner was determined by popular vote via the internet.     Northwest Christian dominated the NE league cross country race at Colfax Tuesday by putting the first four runners across the finish line. Jack Ammon of NWC led the pack with a 16:14 time over the 5K flat course around the Colfax golf course.     Colfax volleyball team booked a sweep Saturday at Okanogan to win the seventh straight championship at the Okanogan tournament. The Bulldogs waged the day-long campaign with just one game loss which came at the start of the championship game against the host Okanogan team.     Final prices for the two properties sold Sept. 16 at an auction conducted by Kincaid Real Estate were $467,500 for the Manning property which included the covered former railroad bridge and $264,000 for farmland in the Farmington area. Last week’s Gazette listed the top bids for the two properties, but the final price included a 10 percent buyer’s premium.... Full story

  • St. John seeks contractor to raze Cold Storage building

    The Cold Storage building in St. John may finally be seeing its last days. St. John city officials are advertising for someone to tear down the building which has become a liability, according to town Clerk Linda Hayes. She said not only is the building full of asbestos, the roof is close to caving in. Paul Sands of Spokane donated the building to the city of St. John in April of 2013.   • Texting said cause of Highway 195 fatal accident

    The driver had veered toward the shoulder and corrected, but the Toyota Camry was in the wrong lane of Highway 195 Friday morning, Sept. 12. “Witnesses reported the car straightening out and it stayed there,” said Whitman County Coroner Pete Martin. A semi-truck was approaching in the southbound lane and the two vehicles collided head-on.     Nancy Taylor of LaCrosse was honored by the National Weather Service Saturday for more than 40 years of service in the Cooperative Weather Observer program with a ceremony at the forecast office in Spokane. She was presented with the agency’s 2014 Thomas Jefferson Award for outstanding service. The Jefferson award is the agency’s most prestigious, and Saturday’s presentation to Nancy was the only one presented this year to a cooperative weather observer from the Western Region.   • Falconry set for Garfield

    A backyard falconry project in Garfield is now underway after the city granted permission under its fowl policy. An exception was made to a city ordinance – which only allows for three fowl in certain zones – for new resident Landon Moore, who trains falcons for abatement, the practice of using the predator birds to reduce crop damage by pest birds.     Former Farmingon Mayor Ron Dugan is preparing to send letters to the town’s 90 voters regarding the upcoming levy proposal to be decided in November. It will be a second attempt to pass current expense and street maintenance ballots this year. The vote regarding $9,000 for the streets and $6,000 for current expense failed on the Aug. 4 primary ballot.     A group of 15 Shelby American Cobra cars made their way through Whitman County Sept. 19 on the “Cobra 1,000,” an annual 1,000-mile tour. For the 25th year of the tour, the group began in Stevenson, Wash., two days before coming to Whitman County.
