    Oakesdale defeated Colton in a showdown Tuesday in 1B volleyball action on the Wildcats’ court. The two power clubs battled to a 29-27 score in the first game, and then the Nighthawks pulled out the next two, 25-11 25-23. Colton did stake leads over the undefeated Oakesdale club in the first and third games, but they couldn’t hold an edge. The loss ended Colton’s win run at nine games.     Tekoa/Rosalia junior Gavin Merritt closed down the win margin of NWC’s Tyler Shea Tuesday in the NE cross-country run at Springdale. Shea, who has dominated the league events to date, finished at 16:15 and Merritt placed second at 16:36. Randy Dixon of Springdale finished third with a 16:45 clocking.     Next court appearance for a 14-year-old Colfax boy who was charged with harassment with a threat to kill was set for today, Oct. 5. Bail for pre-trial release was set at $50,000.     CASTANON BAIL REDUCED The bail for pre-trial release of Jose Castanon, 53, Rosalia, was reduced from $500,000 to $10,000 Friday morning in superior court.     The proposed Oakesdale trestle removal project moved a step forward Monday when the county Public Works department received a permit from the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.   • County calls for rock crushing bids at Bauer

    Whitman County Commissioners approved a call for bids for rock crushing at Bauer Quarry outside Colton and piling at the Gnaedinger stockpile site north of Palouse on Highway 27. The bid calls for 50,000 tons of rock from Bauer to be crushed and 50,000 tons to be stockpiled at Gnaedinger. Estimated cost for each job will be $250,000 to $300,000.     The City of Palouse will seek an additional bid on replacing the well telemetry system which monitors water level to keep it constant in the town’s reservoir. The electronic system was installed in 2001-02 with the town’s well No. 3 in an upgrade. Public Works Superintendent Dwayne Griffin asked A.E.S. of Rathdrum, Idaho, – the company which installed the original system and maintains it – to give a bid of what it would cost to replace it.     Whitman County road crews began paving on Farmington Road Monday morning on a five-mile project north of town toward Tekoa. The work, done by Central Washington Asphalt of Moses Lake, began after a delay to wait for the temperature to reach 45 degrees. The warmer temperature is needed to prevent cracking when the asphalt is laid down.     The $1.8 million Sand Road widening project is complete.     Palouse Chamber of announces the 16th annual Haunted Palouse, set for Oct. 20-21 and Oct. 27-28.
