ITEM - Tacoma teachers ended their strike of a couple weeks by winning most of their demands. Despite being among the highest paid teachers in the state, they will be protected from the 1.9 percent pay cut imposed statewide by the Legislature by being paid out of reserves. The first Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been delivered. It was flown to Japan and will go into service in November for All Nippon Airways. The takeoff was a few minutes late. Alex Teade, a graduate from Colfax last year, has been awarded $2,500 through the Presidents Scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year at Eastern Washington University. This scholarship is awarded to high school students with a cumulative high school GPA of 3.8 or higher or an SAT score of 1250 or higher. The water systems at Whitman County’s Klemgard Park, Kamiak Butte and Wawawai Park will be shut off Oct. 10 in preparation for winter. This will include the water to the flush toilets in restrooms at Kamiak Butte. Vault restrooms at the butte, Klemgard and Wawawai will remain open. The county parks remain open year-round. An eight hour refresher course for drivers 50 and over will be in Colfax Oct. 17 and 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. each day in the Public Service Building in Colfax. The course is conducted with half sessions each day. The AARP course addresses ways to compensate age-related changes that can affect driving ability and behavior. Colfax gridders passed a mid-season test with a resounding 32-6 win over the Reardan Indians in Friday’s homecoming game. After dominating two NE foes in league play this week, the Colfax Bulldogs will travel to Rogers High in Spokane Friday to mix it up with teams from big schools in the Spokane Crossover tournament.
