Whitman County Commissioners Monday approved the publishing of a notice of intent to surplus 12 items from the Public Works Department. The annual list, which usually consists of six or seven items, includes pickups, two Mack trucks, a road grader and other equipment. Building began last weekend for Haunted Palouse, which is celebrating its 14th year. Through the past 13 years, more than $400,000 has been generated for local non-profit groups. A superior court jury Sept. 30 found Ruddy Aladina, 25, Pullman, not guilty of a charge of second degree rape. The jury was also unable to reach a verdict on a lesser charge of third degree rape. The jury verdict came after a three-day trial. The charge was filed after Pullman Police received a report from a 21-year-old Pullman woman who alleged Aladina had forced her to have sex. While many area schools are seeing declining enrollment, the LaCrosse school has seen a slight jump in enrollment and staffing, Superintendent Doug Curtis reported at the LaCrosse Community Pride community discussion Sept. 30. After two weeks on the road, Colfax gridders will return to their home grid to host Kettle Falls Friday in the homecoming game. The Kettle club will arrive after getting their first win of the season, a 16-14 trim over Oroville with a charge in the last quarter. A new road project is underway at the Port of Whitman County industrial park in Pullman. Representatives from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) met with port commissioners in July regarding the road project and are now moving forward with it. The road, which will be on SEL property in the Port, will run parallel to NE Hopkins Court beginning at NE Terre View and ending at NE Hickman Court, according to a news release from SEL. Colfax City council Monday night approved annexation of 1.59 acres of land behind St. Ignatius, the site of a proposed housing development, on a 4-2 vote. The vote came after the council received a petition from 22 residents of the South Hill area who objected to annexing the property at this time without more information on the type of development which could go on the site. Events on Main owner Kari Rimbey has a few reasons to be thankful – 76 million to be more exact. Hackers unsuccessfully attempted to work their way into the Events on Main credit card machine via Rimbey's merchant number Monday, causing debit and credit cards to not work at the terminal. “It was just an attack on our merchant account,” said Rimbey.
