Meet Shelly Feldner, Colfax Much of Shelley Feldner’s life is about horses. She now owns eight, mostly ponies that she trains and serves as a leader of the Saddle Pals 4H club and an officer in the Pony Club. Shelley adds her job at Tick Klock Pharmacy in Colfax is also about horses. “I have the job to support the horses,” she explained with a smile. Shelley grew up in Albion and attended school at Pullman. She went to Washington State University and graduated in 2003 with a degree in pharm...

  • Morgans ready for another old-time plow

    Joe Smillie|Oct 15, 2009

For the 18th year, area vintage tractor enthusiasts will gather at the David Morgan ranch in the Palouse River Valley at Manning to work up the ground for another fall crop. Morgan has his own collection of more than a dozen tractors, ranging from John Deere wheel tractors to Caterpillar crawlers to a brilliant red International T-D 6. “My dad used to farm with an International just like that,” Morgan said in his shop Monday. “I remember harvesting with it when I was a kid.” Morgan’s collection started with a 1939 John Deere Model H, which he...

  • Water at Kamiak Butte to be regularly chlorinated

    Jeslyn Lemke|Oct 15, 2009

The drinking water at Kamiak Butte will now be regularly chlorinated after too much coliform bacteria was found there in mid-summer. The park’s eight water spickets are now shut down for winter, but the new chlorinating system will be up and running by Oct. 20, said county parks operations and trails coordinator Justus Barton. The issue of the bacteria came up last summer after the Department of Health discovered the coliform in test samples from the park’s regular coliform monitoring program. “We received a bunch of samples back testing posit...

    Jeslyn Lemke|Oct 15, 2009

Construction to halt leaking of Uniontown’s three wastewater lagoons should begin by next spring, according to the consulting engineer working on the project. Plans for the repair of the lagoons, which have been leaking about 17,000 to 22,000 gallons per day are currently under review for approval by the state Department of Ecology (DOE). If they approve the plans, the project will go to bid in December and construction should start next March or April, according to Andy Tom, a consulting engineer with James A. Sewell and Associates, the c...

  • Gravel shoulders repair Chipman Palouse Trail

    Jeslyn Lemke|Oct 15, 2009

Gravel will be placed along two miles of the Bill Chipman Trail next month. Approximately 150 cubic yards of gravel will be put down to finish repairs recently completed by North Central Construction (NCC). NCC offered to repair a segment of the trail after it was damaged two years ago when the construction company was contrator for the project to expand the Moscow-Pulllman Highway to four lanes. “They drove heavy equipment up and down it,” said Justus Barton, Whitman County parks operation and trail coordinator. “It broke some of the aspha...

Note-This question was asked at the Colfax Rosauers. A barrel for donations for the local F.I.S.H food pantry is located at the front of the store. Are you going to buy food for the barrel? Charles Herr, Colfax “My wife probably will. I’m just going to get a beer.” Sue Gilchrist, Colfax “Now that I know about the barrel, yes, I’m going to buy food. People need more information.” Dale Dechenne, St. John “I’m not going to buy food for this local pantry, but we give food to the food bank in St. John.” Carol Dechenne, St. John “Probably not.” Y...

Falling for It W. BRUCE CAMERON You’ve probably heard the expression “I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up,” which would be a very appropriate Official Motto for my 401(k). It’s often heard in old TV commercials, in which an elderly woman summons medical assistance via a transmitter in a necklace medallion that looks a little like something Mr. T would wear. “I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up, though I am smiling and cheerful because I’m not exactly the world’s best actor,” she says. This commercial speaks to me because I am a member of what is somet...

Bad Initiative Tim Eyman has proposed another initiative that will hurt Washington state. I-1033 will hurt every aspect of the state. That is why the opposition to the initiative is so diverse. Microsoft, a huge corporation opposes it, emergency services such as the Washington State Council of Firefighters oppose it, and the Washington state Children’s Alliance opposes I-1033. Eyman claims, “Removing I-601’s reasonable fiscal discipline and policies resulted directly in a massive $9 billion deficit.” This is false. The state deficit was cau...

The accompanying picture is of Jeremy Ensley seeding chemical fallow this fall. They follow this machine with a harrow. It makes pretty good mulch on the soil surface soil. We must stop soil erosion. Conventionally cultivated summer fallow is the reason for the erosion problem in the Palouse. If you question that statement, in the spring of the year notice that the fields that have those terribly eroded hills are in fields that have been conventionally summer fallowed the summer before. We have learned a way to do it and not have that happen. I...

American innovation will bring country back Some prominent economists tell us we are starting to come out of the worst recession since the Great Depression, but many worry the uptick won’t last. Since December 2007, Americans lost $13 trillion in household wealth, and our country is swimming in red ink. Today, the federal debt is $11.4 trillion and growing because of a new round of federal spending. Some economists project it could reach $17 trillion in the next decade if Congress and President Obama continue at their current pace. Meanwhile, o...

Focus in Letterman episode be vulnerability THE PEOPLE taking the most interest in what has got to be the most picayune topic of the moment, the David Letterman affair, are, I suspect, women in the workplace. There can’t be one woman who has spent any number of years out in the workplace who has never been propositioned by one of her male superiors. I mean, even the homely ones. Women, that is. Often it’s the boss who’s homely. And if he’s hot to trot and doesn’t get to do much trotting at home, it’s that old song, if I’m not near the one...

  • Sentencing set for Grenz

    Oct 15, 2009

An Oct. 16 sentencing has been scheduled for Kevin Grenz, Farmington, after he was convicted by a superior court jury Oct. 6 on a charge of child molestation in the first degree following a two-day trial. The charge against Grenz said the molestation took place in late 2001. Grenz at one point had pleaded guilty to the charge, but the court revoked the plea and reinstated the trial date. The plea was revoked because Grenz had not been fully advised of the sentences he faced in the wake of entering a guilty plea. The trial began Monday with...

  • County considering cutting off services to junior taxing districts

    Joe Smillie|Oct 15, 2009

To reduce costs from Whitman County’s general operating budget, commissioners are considering eliminating its long-standing administration of junior taxing districts. In a 2010 budget session Tuesday morning, Commissioner Pat O’Neill asked Auditor Eunice Coker to research the potential savings the county could receive from cutting off the county’s fire, cemetery and park and recreation districts. The county currently oversees payroll services and keeps the books for those taxing districts without charge. O’Neill said the county’s budget cr...

  • Colfax ‘green river’ delayed

    Oct 15, 2009

A Colfax version of a Green River ordinance, which would require registration of door-to-door vendors in town, was delayed again at the Oct. 5 council session. Mayor Norma Becker and city council members have pushed for the ordinance after getting complaints this summer of traveling sales teams working late at night and using pressure tactics. Council members have also questioned the legality of street vendors operating along Main Street. Colfax Chief Bill Hickman has done research for preparing an ordinance. A vote on the proposal was tabled...
