    Pomeroy moved closer to the SE volleyball title this week when they stacked two more wins in the league rounds. The Pirates face a big test tonight when they host Oakesdale, number-two team in the league race. Pomeroy Tuesday swept LaCrosse/ Washtucna/Kahlotus 25-19 25-16 and 25-18 to move their SE string to 12-0. Ireland Mayfield and Toni Cloud each booked a 17-17 night serving. Kacey Halbert had 11 digs.     Colfax volleyball players will host Lind/Ritzville/Sprague today in the home gym and then host Liberty Saturday as they head down to the final matches of the league campaign. The Bulldogs home matches this week follow two wins on long road trip last week. Colfax now stands at 7-0 in the league campaign.     Colfax Bulldogs aim to crank it up a notch this week when they host the Reardan Indians in what is expected to be another tough test near the end to the league run. The Bulldogs will host Reardan after sustaining a 22-48 loss to Davenport on the Gorillas' home turf last Friday. Davenport took control of the game with a 28-point outburst in the fourth quarter.     All cross country runners in the NE will converge at Audubon Park in north Spokane for the all-league races Saturday. Saturday's race will be an all-out league event with the junior high race at noon, boys’ race at 1:30 and the girls’ race at 2 p.m. Next Saturday the Bulldog runners will join other NE teams for the regional qualifying round at Walla Walla with SE runners in the mix.     The annual Colfax and Community Fund will begin today with a presentation at the Colfax Rotary noon luncheon at the Methodist Church. Members of the fund will then go to businesses to solicit donations. “This is our start of funds for the season,” said Mark Clinton, a member of the fund board.     The monthly employment report was released last week, showing a slight decline in the unemployment rate for the state and county. The state's rate now stands at 5.2 percent, down from 5.3 from August. The 5.2 rate contrasts with a 6.3 percent unemployment rate in Sept. 2014.     The latest in a series of projects at the Port of Whitman County Business Air Center (POWBAC) has been completed. Port Properties and Development Manager Debbie Snell said the project to even out and expand the runway was completed Oct. 15 and the airport re-opened for day use Friday after being closed for construction since the end of July.     Vintage tractors of all shapes and sizes converge for the 24th annual plowing bee at the David Morgan ranch along the Palouse River west of Manning Saturday.   • Port awards $1.2 mil job bid

    The Port of Whitman County commissioners Monday approved a bid award to Railworks of Airway Heights for a railroad project at the Port of Wilma. Railworks had the low bid for the project, coming in just less than $1.2 million. The Port earlier this year received a $500,000 grant from the Freight Rail Assistance Project and also received a $500,000 loan from the Freight Rail Investment Bank.     When ballots were sent out Friday for the Nov. 3 election, one race was inadvertently left out. Missing from the ballot is position 5 for Hospital District No. 3, which covers Colfax.
