She was released on her own recognizance after her first appearance in court Monday.... Full story

  • Students observe pro-life silence

    Jeslyn Lemke|Oct 22, 2009

In the name of saving lives, a small group of Colfax High School students Tuesday observed a day of silence for fetuses taken by abortion. As of Monday afternoon, four students had submitted permission slips from parents for the observance which called for them to remain silent except for brief periods during the day. The students wore armbands made of red duct tape to signify the event. All the Colfax school staff and student body were informed of the event Oct. 15 in a staff meeting and a school-wide announcement. Students at schools around...

If you were a superhero, what would be your superpower? Amanda Bridge, Pullman “I would want to be telekinetic.” Would you use it for good or evil? “Good, of course. Mostly just to turn out the lights at night.” Joshua Parker, Pullman “I would want the ability to projectile vomit on command. That way, if you have a meeting you don’t want to go to – bleh. You get trapped in a boring conversation – bleh.” Kelsey Kittrell, Pullman “Telekinesis. If only to be able to get through everyday life faster – with less effort.” Todd Bishop, Colfax “I... Full story

Most qualified Vote by mail, we think, a common sense method of voting in this hectic day and age. When the ballot arrives, look no further, mark it immediately in the box designed for the ninth district House of Representative candidate Susan Fagan. We endorse this action to elect the most qualified candidate both in knowledge and experience. Gerald Druffel, Carol Druffel, Clarkston Aloha I read an article in the Honolulu Advertiser.com dated October 16, 2009 with a dateline of Colfax. It seems the University of Hawaii football team didn’t h...

Trial of the Dog The following is from the actual court transcripts in the trial of the Dog, accused by his owner (me) of knocking over the garbage can, chewing shoes and an assortment of other misdemeanors. Judge (me): For these terrible crimes, how do you plead? Dog: I deny what I did was “terrible,” I deny what I did were crimes, and I deny that I did them. Can we go for a walk? Judge: No. Sit. You’ve been a bad dog. Dog: Are you going to finish your sandwich? I think that’s the real question here. Judge: When I came home, the trash can was... Full story

Maybe it’s something in the water, but there are some screwy ballot proposals popping up these days -none wilder than Spokane’s Proposition 4. Proposition 4 is the brainchild of a group called Envision Spokane, a coalition of left-leaning activists, union members and environmentalists who pooled their wish lists into “a community bill of rights.” Proposition 4 amends the city charter to create an expansive and expensive bundle of vague new rights. For example, Prop. 4 would extend the prevailing wage and apprentice quota requirements to all pri...

“INITIATIVE 1033 SLASHES funding for nursing homes, in-home services and other senior services.” Shelby Gilje says in an ad that runs over and over again on television. “That’s why I’m voting no on Initiative 1033.” You remember Shelby? The ad just lists her as a senior citizen, but she used to be the Seattle Times trouble shooter or reader ombudsman for many years, at least I think it was the Times and not the P-I. I worked with her when she was a reporter on the Bremerton Sun, and she was a good one. Which is why she is being used in thi...

  • Oakesdale projects near completion

    Jeslyn Lemke|Oct 22, 2009

Two projects in Oakesdale; a new business office space and a new recycling yard, were both slated to wrap up Friday, mayor Russ Rickett reported. Located at the corner of Second and Bartlett Streets, the recycling yard is a paved and fenced lot with bins to hold compost materials, behind the city’s old bus barn. Citizens can bring compostable materials like grass clippings, tree branches, old leaves and anything else organic to the center. The recycling center is the result of a push by the Washington Department of Ecology to encourage less bur...

  • My two cents: A first-hand interview with Pine City author Jean Flanigen

    Jeslyn Lemke|Oct 22, 2009

With her unruly gray hair and intense green eyes, Jean Flanigen walks into Sherry Lynnes’s Café in St. John and immediately owns the room. “Are you open? Do you have a menu? Can I get some coffee?” she asks the waitress across the room. All eyes in the place are on her in a second and she doesn’t seem to notice the attention or care. The waitress responds to it all, nodding her head at every inquiry, shuffling to get menus and showing us to a table. Flanigen doesn’t stop once the waitress shows up with coffee, affirming her with a hearty “Bl... Full story

THURSDAY Global warming will leave the Arctic Ocean ice-free during the summer within 20 years, according to a report released by Peter Wadhams, professor of ocean physics at the University of Cambridge. The changes will mean the top of the Earth will appear blue rather than white when photographed from space and ships will have a new sea route north of Russia. Biologists have found a vegetarian spider in Central America who dodges ants to get to its favored, protein-packed plant. The small, jumping spider, was named Bagheera Kiplingi after... Full story
