BERYLA L. MARTIN Beryla L. Martin, 89, lifelong LaCrosse resident, died Oct. 31, 2015, at the Whitman Hospital in Colfax. Born Aug. 12, 1926, in Spokane to Homer and Georgia Pickard Woodward, she grew up in LaCrosse and graduated from high school there in 1944. Payment of a bill for the newly-posted Wayfaring signs around Colfax has been delayed because the signs lack contrast and are difficult to read. Zumar Industries of Tacoma has billed the city $5,979 for the signs, which were posted by city crews last week in advance of the PAC-12 race. The signs advise motorists of locations of scenic sites from different locations around Colfax. Trudy and Gary Libey celebrated Trudy’s recent retirement with a trip to Washington, D.C. They were the guests of Robb and Molly Akey. Akey is the defensive line coach for the Washington Redskins. Dusty Homestead Ministries, led by Tom Riedner of Dusty and Greg Nolan of Colfax, met in Spokane last week with the “Feed Spokane” group and volunteers from Fairchild Air Force Base to make 30 meal packets for Spokane soup kitchens from 13,500 lbs. of supplies. The St. John town council adopted a revised dog ordinance Oct. 26. The ordinance defines large dogs, potentially dangerous dogs, dangerous dogs, provocation of dogs and the proper enclosure of a potentially dangerous dog. The ordinance was revised in order to scale it back, said Mayor K. B. Ninth District legislators Mary Dye and Joe Schmick are expected to be in Pullman next week for the regularly-scheduled Nov. 10 city council meeting. A 65-mile section of the Columbia River Plateau Trail, between Kahlotus and the Martin Road trailhead 20 miles south of Cheney, was also part of the move to close down the trails in a budget bill at the end of the legislative session. The Halloween festivities in Colfax have ended, and Colfax’s Unified Director Valoree Gregory said more than 800 people attended ghost hunts and tours at the former St. Ignatius Hospital over the last two weeks. “It was just successful,” said Gregory. “With the Pac-12 here and other things, it made Colfax a pretty fun place to be.” Gregory said she is not sure of the final total raised from the Haunted Hospital attraction, but she estimates at least $7,000 to have been raised, which will be divided among the Downtown Association, Chamber o...
