In the movie Bambi, Thumper the rabbit teases Bambi by saying, “He doesn’t walk very good, does he?” Then, his mother says, “Thumper!” Thumper:“Yes, mama?” Mama: “What did your father tell you this morning?” Thumper: “If you can’t say something nice don’t say nothing at all.” The Bible says a lot about a person’s speech. It does because of the importance and power of our tongue. There is an old saying that proclaims, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” However, words can hurt and cause harm. In fact, one verse...

Dusty Steve and Fran Maki have their own version of ObamaCare. Last week, Steve bought an ambulance that belonged to the town of Deary, Idaho. He had to remove the siren and the Deary sign on the side of the vehicle, but the flashing lights and police scanner still operate. It’ll make a great guide car when moving farm equipment on the highway, should quickly get them through any traffic jams at the Dusty intersection, can transport employees during harvest and, of course, is available for any personal emergency medical runs. Fran Jones has vol... Full story

Names of the students went into a drawing for an all-expense-paid trip for...
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) recently announced that they’ve gone insane. Of course, that isn’t exactly how they worded it. What they say on their Website, www.peta.org, is that from now on, we should all refer to fish as “sea kittens.” PETA, you see, is against eating fish and figures that renaming the sea creatures will cause people to think twice before they head off to Red Lobster. Don’t think that, in terms of eating fish, ordering a lobster lets you off the hook, no pun intended. According to the 1904 Entente C...
Visit Matthew In the wake of recent cuts in aid to the poor by Congress, and looking forward to even more cuts in the future, it may be time for those of us who profess to be followers of Christ to visit Matthew 25:31-46. Jesus said, “ I was hungry and you gave me to something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was homeless and you took me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you cared for me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” I am always struck by the fact that Christ did not say that the...
In the midst of all the turmoil, confusion and partisan infighting over the Affordable Care Act, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s words have come back to haunt us: “We have to pass the bill so you can find out what is in it.” Well, now we know. Millions of people who buy their own health insurance are losing their coverage because their policies don’t qualify under Obamacare. Contrary to the president’s repeated assurances, they can’t keep their policies or their doctors. And because Obamacare requires policies to include benefits an...
When he declared, “No one is madder about the website than I am,” President Barack Obama delivered the line with his usual unemotional cool. But apparently he sent out some strong signals. The woman standing behind him who was reduced to one of those awful Washington human props started to faint. Maybe she picked up on his anger. His displeasure is certainly justified. The bureaucrats, the contractors and the geeks have managed to make an unholy mess of his legacy-defining health-care reform, just as it was beginning to get off the ground. The...
County Public Works Superintendent Mark Storey reported to county commissioners Monday morning that the department is initiating a limited de-icing program that was used on Monday for the first time. The primary county roads that will get the de-icing are Colfax Airport Road, Pullman Airport Road, Albion Road and Pullman-Albion Road. “We’re not going to de-ice at citizens’ requests,” Storey said. “We will undoubtedly get pressure for it. We’ll go through this winter and see how it goes.” Storey also told commissioners that the guardrail pro...
Judge William Acey declared a mistrial just after noon Friday after the jury in the Richard Lee-Waddell trial reported they were unable to reach a unanimous decision. When polled by Judge Acey, each juror said they didn’t believe the panel could reach a verdict in a reasonable period of time and were hopelessly deadlocked. The trial involved two charges of vehicular assault filed against Lee-Waddell after investigation of a Sept. 26, 2011, two car accident north of the fairground. Lee-Waddell was the driver of a car which collided with a s...
