  • A Veteran's Day thought

    In the movie “Starship Troopers,” citizenship was a very special status. To earn citizenship, one had to serve in the military. Citizenship gave those who served the right to vote. In this science fiction story, the rights of citizenship were not given freely. Citizenship here does not have to be earned. For most, it is a birthright. And, on top of that, very little is asked of citizens. Some citizens who have given the most to the country are veterans. We should give them our respect in return.     On Monday, Oct. 30, three days after the last game of a second consecutive winless football season, the St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse players returned to the practice field. They divided up, choosing sides – red and gold – by schoolyard pick, as coach Ken Gering handed out old Eagles jerseys from the equipment room. He set a hand clock to four 12-minute quarters.     Colfax girls’ team placed eighth Saturday in the state cross country all B run at Pasco’s Sun Willows Golf course. The Bulldogs totaled 197 points to finish last on the team tally, but the team entry was unique and points to a solid future for Colfax distance running. Liberty Bell, which had an amazing four finishers in the top seven, won the team title with a scant 23 points, and Northwest Christian of Lacey placed second in the team count with a 51.     Since Sept. 21, tours at the former St. Ignatius Hospital have brought more than 1,000 people to Colfax with 80 percent of them coming from more than 50 miles. Only five resided in Colfax. “It’s been interesting to see the people who come in,” said Valorie Gregory, Colfax unified executive director.     Bill Myers adds hops to the Bitter Rivalry brew. A local farmer with an obscure variety of barley has found a niche for it in brewing. Now, malt made from that barley is the base of an Apple Cup beer called Bitter Rivalry.     Whitman County elections had counted 22.7 percent of ballots as of the closing bell Tuesday night at 8 p.m. Of the 22,229 that were mailed out, 5,046 had been counted with an estimated 1,000 remaining.     A blown end-cap from a water main at the Tekoa School District administration building caused a mudslide early Sunday morning. Water from the main cut a trench through an embankment, sending a wall of dirt into the city pool located downhill from the building.   • County approves budget six weeks before deadline

    Whitman County commissioners approved the 2018 budget Monday, a month and a half before it was due, for a total of $64,069,000. The deadline was Dec. 31. Last year’s budget was $64,734,129. “Quite frankly, the reason why it was passed this early is the fact that there weren’t any major changes,” said Gary Petrovich, county administrative director.
