Colfax volleyball players will target a third straight state title run when they return to Yakima's SunDome Friday for the start of the 16 team state 2B finals.   • Eriksen will report at farmers breakfast

    The first Colfax farmers breakfast will be Nov. 18 at 7 a.m. at the Colfax United Methodist Church social room. St. John farmer Tracy Eriksen will present a report on how he harvests with a Shelbourne strip header on his combine and uses direct seeding to save moisture in taller stubble. The Shelbourne stripper header is manufactured at Shelbourne, England, and used widely by farmers in Colorado and Nebraska to save moisture.   • County transfer station crane will be re-installed

    The knuckle-boom crane is nearly back in service at the new Whitman County Transfer Station after two bolts broke in September. After ordering new bolts and coring out the two broken ones last week, Whitman County Public Works will bring in A&R Crane of Lewiston to put the crane back on its pedestal. The company has slated Monday, Nov. 16, to do the work.     The Whitman County general election last week saw a high amount of votes in one category: under votes. Under votes are logged when a voter fails to vote for a particular office or issue, according to the Washington Secretary of State office. This could be intentional or due to oversight. On advisories, measures and candidates that were on the county-wide ballot, a total of 5,053 under votes were cast collectively – 2,309 of which belonged to Port Commissioner Tom Kammerzell, who also received 5,504 votes in his uncontested re-election.     Pullman Chamber of Commerce hosted a regional tour Nov. 6 of businesses and other areas of the Palouse region.   • Five charges filed against UTV driver in St. John crash

    Five charges of vehicular assault related to the early-morning UTV accident near St. John were filed Nov. 5 in superior court by Prosecutor Denis Tracy against Alexander S. Haxby, 40, Bowen Island, B.C. He has been summoned to appear in court here Dec. 4. The charges list alleged injured passengers in the accident which took place on Rogers Road, an unimproved road which loops around the south side of Webb’s Slough Aug. 30.     Applications are now available for children who can be served in the Colfax Giving Tree project. The project locates trees with ornament tags listing the individual needs of children who are not identified by name. Colfax area residents who receive assistance from DSHS, Community Action Center or the Whitman County Health Department are eligible to receive gifts for children 18 and under.     Port of Whitman commissioners last Thursday awarded the Boyer Park RV expansion project to Palouse River Rock of Colfax who submitted a base bid of $404,700, which was $4,700 higher than the high end of the engineer’s estimate.   • Haunted Palouse earns an estimated $48,000

    The 14th Haunted Palouse has concluded with a total attendance of 3,901, including a one night tally of 1,469 Saturday, Oct. 24. That’s the second highest single night count in the 14-year history of the event. The smallest count night this year was Halloween, Oct. 31, during which rain caused the closure of Shady Lane. Organizers dropped admission price from $15 to $10 because of the partial shutdown.     Election officials count ballots last Thursday for the hospital district three race. With another 3,667 ballots added Friday to the general election count, trends held true from election night. The ballot return moved to 8,026 with a possible 500 more left to count. Election turnout is now at 39 percent. Appointed Ninth District Rep.     The Washington State Auditor’s Office last week released another audit report for 2014, again finding that the county lacks significant internal controls. This audit, unlike the previous audit released in September, dealt with payroll processing. The prior audit was in regard to the county’s financial processing and reporting system.
