  • Asotin expected to join NE 2B league next year

    Asotin has petitioned to join the ranks of the NE 2B league for next year. The Panthers, who topped the SE football league with a 3-0 record this year, are expected to join the NE which presently has 11 total teams. A move by Asotin to the NE will be another setback for the SE league which had just four teams in the football campaign this year and is expected to undergo changes on the WIAA charts next spring. The SE, which is District 9 on the WIAA grid, has formally released Asotin, and the NE, which is District 7, has accepted the Panthers.... Full story

  • Applications due for land conservation funding

    The $11 million Palouse Watershed Conservation Program (RCPP) application deadline is Nov. 20.   • Coats for Colfax distribution successful

    Numerous coats were collected for the Coats for Colfax drive, which was started in an effort to keep donated coats local for the benefit of the local community. The first distribution of coats from the Coats for Colfax drive was Saturday, and many people were able to benefit from it. “Everybody that came in for coats left with coats,” said Michele Olson, who was one of the organizers for the drive.     The St. Ignatius Haunted Hospital is not quite ready to close. Colfax's Unified Director Valoree Gregory is planning another haunted attraction for the upcoming holidays.   • Winds cause power outages

    Avista crews were working Tuesday night and Wednesday morning following the largest power outage Avista has seen since the 1996 ice storm. Gusts which reached up to 80 miles per hour downed trees and power lines and blew transformers in some areas. More than 200,000 Avista customers were without power Tuesday night in more than 3,300 reported outages across eastern Washington.   • Stirling Strong blood drive Monday at CHS

    In April 2013, Konnor Stirling was an eight grader at Colfax Junior/Senior High School when he was diagnosed with leukemia. Since then, he has undergone several chemotherapy treatments, a bone marrow transplant and received blood and platelets. And he is still fighting.     Whitman County is working with the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) to establish more sound financial and reporting practices following audit deficiencies earlier this year.     A common sight across the Palouse last month was dust rising up as many area farmers combed through their fields, completing the winter wheat seeding in dry conditions. This practice is called “dusting in” and is quite common in this area. “Eight years out of ten we have dusted in,” said Steptoe area farmer Randy Suess.
