Motions by Michael Assenberg, Colfax, and Steve Martonick, his court-appointed defense attorney, were denied in superior court Friday. Assenberg told the court he was scheduled for a meeting this week with a Spokane Valley attorney about representing him in a civil case. Engineer Munir Daud in his 12th progress report on the Mill Street project Saturday recommended the city council declare the project suspended until spring because of the weather conditions. Daud noted the streetlights, which are slated to be shipped Nov. 29, will be installed as soon as they arrive. The mounts for the lights are ready to go once the light standards arrive. Colfax Chamber of Commerce planned to place bows on streetlight standards for the holiday decorations this year. A volunteer work party was scheduled to put the bows in place on Tuesday. Also, a wooden Santa and reindeer display was placed at the Codger Pole Park along Main Street. McGregor Co. has volunteered to take over the job of placing a Christmas tree with lights and other decorations in the lot next to US Bank. Colfax and Waitsburg/Prescott, two teams that generated a lot of heat in the cold confines of a snowy Martin Stadium last year, will collide again Saturday at the same juncture this year, the semi-final round of the 2B playoffs. Both clubs go into the game for the state ticket with undefeated records. Roger W. Flock, Jr., 30, Pullman, has been summoned to appear in court Dec. 2 after seven charges involving credit card violations were filed against him Nov. 17 in Whitman County Superior court. The Pullman police report said investigation of the credit card cases started last May 26 when they received a report from the Pullman Safeway that a man had attempted to purchase $4,000 in gift cards with a credit card. Among factors in Colfax budget compilations for next year will be an increase in the city’s payments for upkeep and improvements of the Whitman County Library. Colfax pays the library a fee for building maintenance and upgrades because the library district owns the building in Colfax. Other towns around the county provide the library facilities at their expense. Garfield and Palouse school boards will each replace two members after a series of resignations and elections. Palouse has appointed one new member already while Garfield will replace longtime members Craig Cochran and Kenny Restrom, who did not run for re-election Nov. 8. Pirates face Colfax senior Morgan Willson Sunday placed 16th among a field of 78 runners in the 13th edition of the Border Clash race at the Nike World Headquarters Campus in Beaverton, Ore. Willson qualified for the race with her win two weeks ago of the all-B cross country race at Sun Willows Golf course in Pasco. In a wide-ranging meeting of the Colfax school levy committee Monday night, Superintendent Michael Morgan and business manager Reece Jenkin provided information for volunteers aiming for a 2012 levy proposal which will go before the voters. Barnes Cut-off Road will be renamed to honor the late Sen. Eugene Prince, who represented Whitman County in Olympia for 19 years. Whitman County commissioners approved the name change Monday. Commissioner Greg Partch said the move was a fitting tribute for a man who focused so much on roads and bridges while in Olympia. “Transportation was something near and dear to Gene’s heart,” said Partch. Operation budgets hang in the balance as officials at Farmington hold out hope that three levy proposals will somehow get over the 60 percent approval mark in the final count of general election ballots Nov. 28-29. Commissioners of the Port of Whitman County unanimously approved the agency’s $11.4 million 2012 budget at their regular meeting last Thursday, Nov. 17. The agency’s 2012 budget proposal shows income of $1,177,000 from its industrial parks and fiber optic network, while the 37 cent property tax levy is projected to bring in $1,081,000. The port’s $14 million federally-funded fiber optic network expansion skews the 2012 spending plan upward. Moving step by step toward the clean-up stage, the Palouse Brownsfield project will be the subject of a public meeting next Thursday, Dec. 1.
