Pullman Police Chief Gary Jenkins last Thursday issued an alert on the potential for burglaries in Pullman with the Thanksgiving break expected to leave many residences unoccupied this week. The alert was posed in the wake of two robbery arrests two weeks ago when the suspects were believed to be part of a burglary ring that hit Pullman after traveling from the Seattle area. The alert noted the burglary ring works in groups of two to eight. Their standard mode of operation involves knocking on the doors of residences to determine whether or...
Colfax Ranting How refreshing it was to open up this week’s Gazette and not see the ranting of Adele Ferguson. I do appreciate Don Brunell’s spin on business, and he even makes sense some time. Best of all was the coverage of the local championships and participation in state playoffs by all of our young athletes. Keep up the good work. Jack McBride, Landover Redskins OK pilgrims, listen up (John). Almost everyone who read my letter a couple of weeks ago asked what were you talking about. Well folks, we will take it real slow—101 type slow....
It is human nature to take things for granted. When you’ve always had something, when it’s been around your entire life, it’s only natural to overlook it, to think it will always be here. But that’s not the case, and this time of year reminds us to be appreciative of what we have. I’m not talking about creature comforts like plentiful electricity, clean water, electronic gadgets or the family car. I’m talking about the freedom and opportunity we Americans take for granted. My epiphany came during the Cold War when my military unit was sent to...
Quite a few people have been fooled by some new stories about Sarah Palin. One report had her describing how Jesus celebrated Easter and then quoted her charging President Barack Obama with keeping a Muslim museum open during the government shutdown. Both are false, and so bizarre that no one should have believed them. They were humor, fiction. Unfortunately, as usual, the Sarah Palin lampoon was entirely plausible. She’s back, roaming the country to promote her latest book, “Good Tidings and Great Joy: Protecting the Heart of Christmas.” The i...
A survey indicated that 50 percent of America shops on Black Friday. With all the images of people camping out in front of stores, trying to cram through entrance doors and frantically grabbing at merchandise while shouldering away other shoppers, it seems the entire country shops the day after Thanksgiving. In fact, Black Friday has become so big that it has now slopped over on Thanksgiving itself. Then, Cyber Monday starts. The day of frenzied internet shopping. Squeezed in between is a very important shopping event. It is Shop Small...
A young Colfax team which picked up traction for a playoff run at the end of the season, came to the end of the football road Friday night on the Cheney High School field. The Bulldogs were again shut out by the veteran Lind/Ritzville/Sprague Broncos, 43-0, in the state quarterfinal round of the 2B playoffs. The defeat ended the Colfax season with a 6-5 record. Coach Mike Morgan noted overall he and the other coaches have a high regard for what the Colfax team accomplished this year. The...
The fwap, fwap of Colton lineman Austin Staley’s thick gloves penetrated the cold Clarkston night. As he clapped between plays, trying to rally the Wildcat defense against Rosalia, star quarterback Jake Straughan’s helmet was in a bag on the sideline. In a Washington state 1B quarterfinal game, Straughan had gone out with an ankle injury in the first quarter, with Colton looking to counter a 20-6 Spartan lead. Rosalia kept it up and soon took command of the game as Craig Nelson ran toward 350...

A motion to enforce a previously rejected plea agreement in the Daniel Lazcano murder case was filed Monday in superior court by Lazcano’s defense attorney, Eric Christianson. The plea agreement, which would have led to a conviction on a reduced charge of second degree manslaughter, was rejected by Superior Court Judge David Frazier in a hearing July 19. Since the July 19 ruling the court has moved Lazcano’s third trial to Spokane County and Judge Maryann Moreno of Spokane has been named to preside. The motion filed Monday contended when Jud...

Hospice representatives Rita Ackerman and Annie Pillers presented the books along with some bookmarks with the Hospice logo to library staffers. Pillers said November is National Hospice Month, and the group likes to donate books during this month. The books deal with spirituality and dying. “We hear that the books are well used,” Pillers said. She said Hospice volunteers choose the books from the Palouse Grief Coalition and also from national hospice web sit...
Although Colfax dodged the snow bullet Friday, Nov. 15, other areas of the county received some white stuff. Forecasters issued winter storm warnings for the area, but the temperatures were warm enough for a rain and snow mix in Colfax. David Jones, Natural Resources Conservation Service Soil Conservationist based in Colfax, said as he left work Friday afternoon about 4:30 p.m., rain was mixed with snow. However, by the time he reached the top of Buck Canyon Hill heading north, it was all snow. Jones said it snowed all the way to his home in...

The town of Palouse lost a neighbor, a city council member and a friendly face at the grocery store last week with the death of Alison Webb. She served on the Palouse City Council since being appointed in April of last year. Palouse Mayor Michael Echanove was Webb’s next-door neighbor. “She will be missed. She was part of our council team,” Echanove said. “She was really coming into her own the past six, eight months or so. I got to see her shine, to develop her own rhythm on the council and tha...
An account of wolves killing horses in the LaCrosse or Dusty area appears to have been a false rumor. State Fish and Wildlife Officer Doug King last Thursday said he was aware of the account but unable to substantiate the report. King told the Gazette last Thursday he was aware of the rumor and was investigating. Contacted Monday, King said he concluded it did not happen. WDFW Region Director Steve Pozzanghera said area enforcement officers spent a lot of time tracking down any information about wolf kills and he said there was “no substance t...
Late Friday morning, the ambulance moved slowly through Palouse. It went past McLeod’s Market, the community center and by the city council chambers. It had been on site above the Palouse River along North River Road after a call for a missing kayaker the day before. The search and rescue operation went overnight Thursday and into Friday morning. But the ambulance returned down Main Street like any other vehicle, its sirens quiet, its speed without emphasis. The body of Alison Webb had been f...
Jamie Ohl is especially grateful this Thanksgiving. As the WSU senior was traveling from her home in Richland to Pullman on May 30, her 2002 Ford Escape went off Highway 26 at Dusty and rolled on its top. LaCrosse and Colfax rescue voluneers worked approximately 40 minutes to extricate her from the inverted vehicle. On Friday afternoon, Ohl, accompanied by her parents, Phil and Diane Ohl, visited the EMTs at both departments. To show the family’s appreciation, they donated $1,000 to each departm...
