Holiday open house at Dahmen barn The first holiday open house at Dahmen Barn in Uniontown will be Dec. 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cookies and coffee will be served throughout the day. Resident artists will be at work in their studios. The barn is open every day of the week through Dec. 23, and the exhibit runs through Dec. 30. More than 120 artists and craftspeople are represented at the shop at the Barn. Kathleen James Vogeler, 52, died unexpectedly Nov. 18, 2012, at home in Palouse. Colfax football marked the end of the season Monday night with a dessert banquet which honored seven departing seniors. The wrestling population on the Colfax mats exceeded 20 at the start of the season with a larger turnout of Bulldogs and five commuters from two other county programs. Now starting his third season, Bulldog Coach Denis Gransbery has 16 Bulldogs on the mats during pre-season practice sessions with six freshmen joining the ranks. Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc,. announced the company’s new 98,000-square-foot building in Pullman, which is expected to be completed by May, has been named after SEL Distinguished Engineer Stanley E. Zocholl, who died in August at age 83. He held 26 U.S. patents, seven with SEL, and 46 international patents. He joined SEL in 1991 and was widely respected in the industry. Without the boost of a federal telecommunications grant, the Port of Whitman County’s budget will fall back to just over $4 million in 2013. Port commissioners unanimously approved the budget earlier this month. The 2013 budget is a steep drop from the $11.4 million budget for 2012. The current year’s spending plan was boosted by revenue from the federal government, which repaid the port for laying 170 miles of high speed fiber optic cables in Whitman County. 8 years ago Dec. 2, 1887 At Endicott, Nov. 26, 1887, by Rev. Geo. E. Wilcox, C.E. Walmer and Miss Mary Irwin, both of this county, were married. The bride is the daughter of Edward Irwin, one of Whitman County’s representatives in the territorial legislature, and both of the contracting parties are well known in this vicinity. The ceremony occurred in the school house, after a concert, followed by a bountiful repast. Saturday, Dec. 1, Palouse Cares volunteers will gather food for community food banks. Volunteers in Colfax will meet at Rosauers at 9 a.m. ready to go door-to-door. In a work session Monday night, the Colfax School District board discussed its task of setting goals for next year, and following years, which will be affected by the coming change to national Common Core standards. Samantha Zuger, daughter of Bob and Kathy Zuger, former Endicott area residents now of Walla Walla, sang with a group of 87 others in the FFA national chorus while attending FFA’s 85th national convention and expo in Indianapolis. She is now a senior at Walla Walla High school where she is president of the FFA chapter. Crystal Mitchell, daughter of Dr. Christine Mitchell of Pendleton, Ore., and granddaughter of Mary Ann Mitchell and the late David Mitchell of Steptoe, represented Oregon at the national 4H Horse Roundup public speaking contest Nov. 2-4 in Louisville, Ky. Art Swannack and Dean Kinzer will officially be Whitman County’s new commissioners next January, after the Nov. 8 general election count was certified Tuesday. Final count gave Swannack, a Republican farmer and rancher from the Lamont area, 6,922 votes, or 54 percent to the 5,493 votes cast for Rosalia Fire Chief Bill Tensfeld, also a Republican, which was 43 percent.
