One of the best depictions of small unit combat in the Vietnam War was recently shown on television, and it was not even about Vietnam. It was about small unit combat in Afghanistan. The similarities are chilling. Take away the forests and replace them with jungle and very little has changed over the intervening years. Of course, equipment, weapons and communications are better now. The food looks better too, but that is about it. The troops still are isolated, even from their own support. They still conduct small patrols in very hostile...
A man was arrested Saturday for allegedly trying to detonate a bomb at a Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Portland. Reports say the FBI provided him training and materials. We’re trying to prevent attacks, and the FBI is setting them up? It’s ridiculous.” Bruce Hochsprung, Colfax. “I don’t think they set him up at all. I think if a guy is prone to do that sort of thing, we should do everything pos... Full story
The snow load on top of Whitman County’s CETC building in Colfax could be its last. Bob Reynolds, county facilities manager, told county commissioners Monday crews will not be shoveling any snow off the roof of the building this year. “It’s just too dangerous,” he said. “We can’t risk putting somebody up there with the shape that roof is in.” The CETC roof crumpled beneath a heavy load of a massive snowstorm in January 2009. That damage has made the building unsuitable for occupancy when a load is placed on the roof structure. Reynolds last...

Hours into Tuesday’s snow storm, most schools around Whitman County decided to close to avoid transporting children in increasingly poor road conditions. “Mostly out in the country is what we are having trouble with blowing and drifting snow,” said Rosalia Business Manager Phyllis Brown. Citing the fast drifting snow on rural routes, Pullman and Colfax schools closed by 2 p.m. Transportation for the Colfax buses was also hindered when traffic on Main Street was rerouted near the school due to fire crews on station at the Mitz’s Cabinet Shop in...
